GEORGE WALTER MCKINSTRY, OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.

STRAIN ER ATTACHMENT.

Application filed May 10, 1916.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MCKIN- STRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strainer Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a strainer for' use in kitchen sinks, and more particularly to an attachment therefor.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character, wherein a lifting member is so designed to permit of having a detachable connection with the strainer to permit of the waste or foreign matter collected on the strainer being easily and quickly conveyed away by removing the strainer from the outlet orifice and retaining the strainer in a sanitary condition at all times.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in per spective of the discharge end of an ordinary sink showing my improved lifting member attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lifting member removed therefrom; and Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the lifting member attached to the strainer and the strainer being shown partially in section, showing the manner of connecting the lifting member thereto.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the usual apertured permanent cover connected to the sink 6 and on which the apertured strainer 7 is positioned.

My improved attachment or lifting member designated by the character 8 embodies a strand of wire 9 so bent to provide the same with an upstanding inclined U-shaped handle 10 embodying a pair of resilient parallel limbs 11 diverging in a direction from the curved connecting portion 12 of the limbs. Formed on the lower terminals of each of the resilient limbs 11 is an outwardly and laterally extending foot 13 arranged in parallelism one to the other and bent downwardly and rearwardly to provide substan- Specification of Letters Patent.

tially U-shaped toes 14, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully eX- plained. The resilient lower limb 15 of the toes is connected with the extremities of the 6 feet 13 through the medium of a downwardly directed curved connecting portion 16 presenting a convexed contact 17 while the free extremities of the resilient limb of each of the toes is bent downwardly and at right angles to provide threaded attaching shanks 19. These shanks 19 have threadedly mounted thereon nuts 20, whereby when the shanks are inserted in a pair of perforations of the strainer 7, the same will be permanently retained therein through the medium of the fastening nuts 20 and cause the nuts to engage with the under surface of the strainer, thereby concealing the nuts from view. The feet 13 at their point of connection with the resilient limbs 11 present a curved convexed contact point 21 disposed in a plane with the contact 17 and in longitudinal alinement therewith, and when the lifting member is in assembled position the respective contacts 17 and 21 will repose upon the top surface of the strainer and support the handle of the lifting member at all times in substantially vertical inclined position, thereby conveniently positioning the handle at all times within reach of the party designed to cleanse the strainer, thus enabling the strainer to be removed from the orifice or opening of the permanent cover 5 and properly cleansed of all foreign or waste matter collected thereon.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto.

I claim:

As a new article of manufacture, a lifting device for strainers comprising a single strand of material so bent to provide a substantially U-shaped inclined handle, each of the limbs of the handle being bent in a lateral direction providing a foot, a curved con necting portion connecting the feet with said limbs and presenting a convexed contact point, the free terminal of each foot being bent below and upon the foot forming a 5 toe having a downwardly inclined fixed contact point, shanks formed on the free terminals of the toes, and means for connecting the. shanks to an apertured member and holding the first and last mentioned contact points in binding engagement with the top 1&-

surface thereof and defining the handle in a substantially vertical inclined position, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.

GEORGE WALTER MCKINSTRY.
