SPIT'I'OON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
Application filed March 9, 1907. Serial No. 361,565.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUAN EsoUoER, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Barcelona, Spain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in spittoons of the kind in which the receiver or vessel is supported on a column, and when not in use is covered by a casing, which is opened when it is desired to use the spittoon. The receiver is provided with a pipe through which water or other cleaning or disinfecting fluid may be thrown into the receiver by means of suitable devices controlled by a hand or a foot lever.
The object of my invention is to render such spittoons more sanitary, and to produce a neat and attractive looking device, in which the bowl or receiver is covered when not in use.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of my improved spittoon, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of the same, showing the covers opened. Fig. 8 is a vertical section taken at right angles to the position as shown in Fig. 1.
The support is formed by a column a with a base 1 at its lower end, and an enlargement 2 at its upper end on which enlargement are mounted pins g. Pivotally sup ported in these pins are the two covers 6, each of which is hemispherical in form, and which when closed together, as shown in Fig. 1, completely conceal the bowl or receiver g. The shaft in can be moved by a hand lever or pedal, shown in Fig. 3, in which 3 represents the pedal mounted on the pin or shaft & and connected by the pin 11 to the lower end of the upright shaft is.
The upright shaft it passes between guides 5 fastened inside the hollow column a, and at its upper end carries links it, each of which links is pivotally connected to the shaft is and to one of the half covers 6 so that the upward movement of said shaft will throw the covers apart, thereby exposing the bowl or receiver, as shown in Fig. Q. Mounted on the shaft 70 is a spring Z, which normally tends to throw said shaftdown and close the covers 6 when the user removes his foot from the pedal 3.
The bowl or receiver g is of any desired shape, and is provided with a discharge pipe 7. Into the upper part of the bowl 9 a pipe 8 is adapted to deliver water or other cleansing or disinfecting fluid. This pipe is provided with a valve a, which is operated by means of a link 2? pivotally connected to the handle thereof, and the lower end of which link is pivotally connected to the shaft 70 at the point u.
The operation is as follows :The user presses upon the pedal 3 throwing open the covers a by the upward movement of the shaft 70, and this movement of the shaft at the same time opens the valve in the pipe .9 allowing liquid to be delivered into the bowl or receiver 9.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a spittoon, the combination of a hollow column, a bowl terminating in a delivery pipe passing through said column, a supply pipe delivering into the upper part of said bowl, hemispherical cover sections mounted on the top of said column and adapted to swing toward each other to cover said bowl, said cover sections being cut away to allow the passage therethrough of said pipes, a valve located in said supply pipe, and means for simultaneously swinging said covers away from each other to expose said bowl and for opening said valve, substantially as described.
2. In a spittoon, the combination of a hollow column, a bowl terminating in a deaway to allow the passage therethrough of said pipes, a Valve located in said supply pipe, means for simultaneously swinging said covers away from each other and for opening said Valve, and spring operated devices for restoring the parts to their normal conditions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signatiire 111 presence of tWo Witnesses.
JUAN ESCUDER.
