UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK R. POLLARD, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
WIN DOW-WAS H ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 681,258, dated August 27, 1901. Application filed February 9, 1901- Serial No. 46,695. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. PoL- LARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Washers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window-cleaners, and has for its object to provide, in connection with a suitable stafi or handle, a basket or head adapted to receive and retain a sponge, the said basket or head having associated therewith means for gripping and securely holding the sponge or mop and for releasing the same when necessary. The sponge is very desirable in cleaning windows, for the reason that it will retain more water than any other form of mop, and after the windows have been washed the sponge may be detached from the holder or basket, wrung out, and used for drying the windows. A sponge is desirable also, in that no bristles are left upon the windows. I The various objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully in the course of the ensuing description.
The invention consists in a window-cleaner embodying certain novel features and details of construction hereinafter more fully set forth, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mop or sponge holder constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown applied to an operatingshown in the form of a basket, and said base has extending obliquely from the back thereof a handle-socket 2, in which a suitable handle 3 is adapted to be removably inserted. Said handle may be of any desired length.
Extendingoutward from the front surface of the base 1 is a series of hoop-supporting arms 4, four of said arms being illustrated in the drawings, although it will be apparent that any number of arms may be employed. At a point intermediate their ends the hoopsupporting arms are bent, as shown at 5, so
. as to cause their outer extremities to flare to a also connected with the base 1, and these arms a are preferably formed in oppositely-located pairs, which are formed from a single length of wire, the central portion of which is bent transversely to form a cross bar or portion 10,
which lies against the base 1. The cross bars or portions 10 intersect or cross each other centrally of the base 1, as shown in Fig. 3, and also pass beneath the coupling or anchoring ring 6, being thereby securely attached to the base. The arms 9 extend toward the front of the basket or holder and have hooked outer extremities 11, which are arranged just within the plane of the mop-holding ring 7, so as to enter and engage the sponge or mop 8 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1. The arms 9 are also formed so as to diverge toward their outer hooked extremities and are encircled by a slide -ring 12, which when pushed outward serves to hold the hooked extremities toward each other and in engagement with the mop.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a sponge or any other form of mop may be inserted in the flared end of the basket or holder and securely held by bringing the inner portion thereof into engagement with the hooked extremities of the grippingarms, the slide-ring being subsequently slid outward toward the extremities 11,thus drawing the hooks toward each other and causing them to firmly engage the mop. The sponge or mop is then saturated with water and passed over the windows for cleaning the same. After the windows have been thus washed the ring 12 may be slid backward for is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, a base having provision for the attachment of ahandle thereto; in combination with a series of outwardly-flaring hoop-supporting arms, a
hoop carried by the outer extremities of said arms and forming a mop-holding basket, and mop-gripping means contained within the hoop-supporting arms.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a base having provision for the attachment of a handle; of a series of hoop-supporting arms connected therewith, a
mop-holding hoop connecting the outer extremities of said arms, and mop-gripping arms located within the hoop-supporting arms and also connected with and supported by the base.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a base having provision for the attachment of a suitable handle; of a series of hoop-su pportin g arms connected to the base,a mop-holding hoop connecting the outer extremities of said arms, a series of mop-gripping arms arranged within the hoop-supporting arms and having a normal outward divergence, and a slide-ring mounted for 1ongitudinal movement on said gripping-arms and embracing the same.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a base having provision for the attachment of a suitable handle; of hoopsupporting arms connected therewith and bent intermediate their ends to provide widely-flaring outer portions, a mopholding hoop connecting the outer extremities of said arms, mop-gripping arms connected with the base and having hooked extremities, and a slide-ring embracing said gripping-arms and adapted to hold the hooked extremities thereof in engagement with the mop.
5. In a device of the class described, the
' combination with a base having, provision for the attachment of a suitable handle; of a series of hoop-supporting arms, a mop-holding hoop connecting the outer extremities thereof, a series of mop gripping arms having hooked extremities, a slide-ring for operating said gripping-arms, and a couplingor anchoring ring engaging all of the arms and serving to secure the same to the base.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
