COMBINED nor HEAD AND wsmazn.
(Application filed my 23, 1898.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT rice.
HENRY J. GLEASON, OF ARLINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
, COMBINED MOP HEAD AND WRINGER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,654, dated March 21, 1899.
Application filed May 23, 1898. Serial No- 681,408. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, HENRY J. GLEASON, of Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mop Head and Wringer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to mops provided with wringing attachments, and has for its object to provide certain improvements on the combined mop head and wringer set forth in my Patent No. 551,625, dated December 17, 1895.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in perspective view my improved mop, showing the preliminary operation of twisting the mop preparatory to forcibly wringingit. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same with the wringing attachment for permitting the use of the mop. Figs. 3 and 4 represent the collar having the hook for receiving the mop-wringer attachment. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent views of the finger-hook adapted to be attached to the end of the mop-wringer handle.
' The same letters and figures of reference indicate the same parts or features in all the figures.
In all the drawings, a represents a mophead having a sleeve or socket a, which is secured to a handle 17, the mop-head having a suitable clamping device for securing one end of the mop-cloth b.
The mop-wringing attachment comprises a frame 0, having suitable means for securing the other end of the mop 17 therein, said frame having extending out from its cross-bar c a hook or finger 0', adapted to engage the crossbar of the mop-head a. To the frame a is secured a rod 0 having near its end a handle 0 which extends crosswise of the rod and is adapted to be grasped by the operator, as shown in Fig. 1,to rotate the clamping-frame c.
As thus far described, the mop head and wringer attachment are no different from that illustrated in my patent hereinbefore referred to.
Secured to the rod or handle I) is a collar d, having two arms d d extending out therefrom, forming a double hook, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The end 01 of the arm (1 is formed with a knob or head, while the end cl of the arm at is bent at a right angle and is formed as a ring.' Preferably the collar and hook are constructed of malleable brass or other suitable material, and after the rod 0 has been placed in the hook the head (1 is forced through the ring b and the latter is pressed to closely confine the said end and prevent it being Withdrawn therefrom. The arm 61 is curved, as shown, to form recesses 2 and 3, the recess 2 being arranged so that when the wringer attachment is'bein g twisted the rod is located in the recess therein, and when the mop is being used the said rod is located in the recess 3. Extending between the arms d d is a web (1 forming a stop with which a rib or projection c on the rod c may engage to hold the wringer attachment in the position shown in Fig. 2. Hence when the hook c is engaged with the cross-bar o and the lip or projection c is forced into engagement with the web d the rod and the wringer attachment are held against endwise movement.
6 indicates a finger-hook formed on the sleeve 6, which is journaled to rotate loosely upon a stud c on the rod 0 The object of the said hook-is to enable the operator to quickly Whirl or rotate the rod 0 for the pur pose of twisting the mop-clothpreparatory to forcibly wringing the same, the operator holding'the hook c with one finger, as shown in Fig.1, while thus whirling the rod 0 with another finger, the mop being thus quickly prepared for the forcible wringing, which is effected by grasping the handle 0 sleeve 0 of the hook e is composed of two parallel arms 6 6 formed on the end of the hook and connected at their ends by an open loop 6 which is at its central portion connected to the hook-bar e by a post 6 There is a bridge a, which connects the post a with the arm-e This sleeve and hook are formed of malleable metal and present the appearance illustrated in Fig. 5 when first manufactured. In order to connect this hook to the rod 6 the knob c on the end of the rod 0 is inserted through the loop 6 until its end presses against the hook-bar e Then the ends of the loop are forced together, as shown in Fig. 7, thereby confining the head or knob and preventing its withdrawal.
. Having thus explained the nature of the Theinvention and described a way of constructing'and using the same, though Without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, I declare that What I claim is- 1. The combination of a mop-head a, the handle I) having a collar, the hook on said collar having a stop or rib, and the wringer attachment comprising the head 0 having the hook c to engage the mop-head, the rod 0 and the locking projection c on said rod adapted to engage the said rib or stop (Z substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a mop-head, the handle therefor, and a wringer attachment having means for engaging the mop, of a collar (Z secured to the handle of the mop-head, said collar being provided with two arms (1 (1 the latter having the recesses 2 and 3, and
one of the said arms having a head or knob and the other having a compressible ring (1 through which the said knob may be passed prior to the said ring being compressed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a mop-head, a handle therefor, and a wringer attachment having a knob or head 0 of a finger-hook 6 having parallel arms 6 6 connected by an open loop 6, said arms a a being adapted to be pressed toward each other to close the loop around the said head or knob 0 In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY J. GLEASON.
