Description

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO T. BOON AND WILLIAM W. SPAULDING, OF GALESBURG, ILL,
IMPROVED MOP.
Specifir ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,872, dated March 21, 1865, antedatcd February 1, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALoNzo T. BooN and WILLIAM W. SPAULDING. of the city of Galesburg, county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful I'llprovement in Mops; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and explicit description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front View. view.
Like letters indicate like parts.
The nature of our improvement consists in a mop that can be man ufaetured much cheaper than those now in use, and which can be wrung or cleansed without putting the hands into the water.
The handle A is made of wood. The rod B is made of iron or other hard substance, and to which is attached the cross rod O. D is a short handle, which is made to slide easily upon the rod B, and to which is attached the cross-rod E. F F are spiral springs, which slide upon the cross-rods G and E. H H are washers or heads, which are fastened upon the ends of the cross-rods C and E. I is a Fig. 2 is a side set-screw for fastening the short handle D to the rod B at any point desired.
Operation When the mop is ready for use,
the short handle D is down, as represented in Fig. 2, and when the same is to be wrung or cleaned we loosen the set-screw I, take hold of the handle D with one hand and the handle A with the other hand, and slide the handle D up to the handle A, (as represented in Fig. 1,) and by holding firmly in one hand the handle D, and turning with the other hand the handle A the mop-cloth is twisted around the rod B, which wrings it sufficiently dry, and by means of the spiral springs F F the cloth is wrung more even at the ends. The washers or heads H H are to prevent the springs and cloth from slippin g 011' the ends of rods 0 and E. The mop-cloth is attached one end to the cross-rod O and the other to the cross-rod E.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rod B, with eross-rod O and heads H H, the handle D, with cross-rod E and set-screw I, and spiral springs F F, when their parts are arranged as specified, in combination with the handle A, for the purpose set forth.
ALONZO T. BOON.
