To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. THOMAS, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Combined Scrubbers and Mops, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a combined scrubber and mop in which the various elements cooperate in a peculiar manner so as to enable the device to be employed with equal facility for either of the purposes mentioned. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising few and simple parts which are so designed as to be very economically manufactured.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the mop cloth as swung under the brush; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the mop cloth as elevated in the position assumed for wringing; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device when used as a scrubber; and, Fig. 4'is a side elevation of the device when used as a mop, the brush being removed.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The numeral 1 designates the handle of the device which is provided at its lower end With the head 2. This head 2 is provided with a socket 3 by means of which it is connected to the handle and is in the nature of a plate 4, to the lower face of which the head of the scrubbing brush 5 is detachably connected. For this purpose, it will be observed that the forward end of the plate 4 is formed with an opening 6 having communication with a rearwardly extending slot 7. The head of the brush 5 is provided with a bolt 8, the head 9 of which is looped so as to form a finger piece and is adapted to be thrust through the opening 6 in the plate 4. A washer 10 is preferably employed in connectionwith the bolt 8 and when the brush 5 is secured to the plate 4, the washer 10 and head?) of the bolt 8 are inserted through the openingfi in the plate 4 and the scrubbing brush 5 then slipped rearwardly so as to throw the shank of the bolt 8 into the slot 7. By turning the finger piece 9 and tightening the bolt 8, the brush can then be securely clamped in position. It will also be observed that the rear edge of the plate 4 is pro vided at opposite sides with downward projections 11 which form shoulders against which the head of the brush 5 fits when the brush is in position.

The mop holding member is in the form of a bail 12 which is 'pivotally connected to the head 2 and is adapted to be either swung forwardly so as to throw the mop cloth l3 under the brush 5 or hold up in the rear of the head 2 when it is desired to use the scrubbing brush 5. 'This bail 12 comprises two longitudinal arms 141, the free ends of which con verge slightly toward each other and are bent outwardly to form the lugs 15 which are inserted in openings in the downwardly proj ecting members 11 upon the plate. The opposite ends of the longitudinal members 14 are connected by means of a loop 16 through which the mop cloth 13 is passed. By reference to the drawings, it will be readily seen that this bail can be very cheaply constructed from a single piece of wire or other similar material.

A sleeve 17 is slidably mounted upon the handle 1 and is formed with a bracket 18 having a bearing 19 at the outer end thereof. A shaft 20 is mounted in the bearing 19 and is provided at its lower end with a hook 21 to which the rear end of the mop cloth 13 is attached, and at its upper end with a crank arm and handle 22. lVhen the sleeve 17 is slipped down upon the handle 1 against the head 2, the' mop cloth 13 is lowered so as to enable the bail 12 to be swung forwardly and the device employed as a mop, as shown in Fig. 1. On the other hand, when the sleeve 17 is moved upwardly upon the handle 1, the mop cloth 13 is raised and the bail 12 pulled rearwardly so as to enable the device to be used for scrubbing, as shown in Fig. 2.

In order to hold the sleeve 17 against any rotary movement upon the handle 1, when in a lowered position, a guideway is provided which is shown as in the nature of a rib 23 extending longitudinally along the handle 1. In the present instance, the rib 23 is formed of a piece of wire stretched longitudinally along the handle and having its opposite ends bent at approximately right angles and ward movement of the sleeve 17.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
