GURRY 00MB.
Patented Nov. 4, 1890.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES DU SHANE, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,022, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed January 7, 1890.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES DU SHANE, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs; and Ido herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved curry-comb. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
This invention is an improved curry-comb, and its object is to simplify and cheapen the construction of the same so as to utilize short pieces of metal and to make the comb flexible and yielding, but at the same time sufficiently stiff to thoroughly do its work; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the handle of the comb, and B the shank attached thereto, which has a crosshead 1), preferably curved, as shown.
C D Edesignate loops formed, respectively, of strips of metal bent upon themselves and united at their ends and serrated on their lower edges, as shown, and these loops are preferably bent into the form of curved ovalsthat is, they are bent into oval form and then these ovals are distorted so that the two longest .sides thereof are curved on arcs of parallel or concentric circles, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The inner side of loop 0 is riveted direct to head I), as indicated at c, leaving the outer portion of the loop free. Loop D is connected Serial No. 336,187. (No model.)
to loop 0 by means of U-shaped pieces F F, the downwardly-bent ends of which are respectively riveted or otherwise connected to the outer portion of loop 0 and the inner portion of loop D, as shown, thus attaching and supporting loop D on loop 0. Loop E is similarly supported and attached to loops D by means of other U-sha'ped pieces F F. Only two pieces F F are shown uniting the loops, as described; but more might be employed, if desired, or one might be used sufficiently elongated to properly support the loops. The greater the number or width of these pieces F the stiffer will be the comb, which when thus formed does not require a backing, and each loop has a sufficient degree of flexibility and vibration to make it self-cleaning and prevent dirt and hairs collecting therein. Only three loops are shown; but more or less might be used, if desired.-
Having thus described my invention, I c1ain1 l. A curry-comb consisting of a series of independent loops arranged side by side and pieces connecting intermediate loops to adjoining loops and a handle connected to one loop at one side of the comb, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, in a curry-comb, of a series of independent loops bent intoacurved oval form and the U-shaped pieces connecting intermediate loops to the adjoining loops, and a handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES DU SHANE. \Vitnesses:
