No. 218,812. Patented Aug. 26,1879.

(B L (um ATTORN EYS N.PETERS. FMOTO-LITHOGRAFMER. WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GAWTHORPE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMB AND.BRUSH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,812, dated August 26, 1879; application filed May 13,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GAWTHORPE, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have im'ented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Comb and Brush; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to curry-combs and brushes; and consists in combining the two by attaching them to the same plate, preferably shaped like an ordinary horsebrush, there being a flange which depends from the support to which the brush and comb are attached, and extends down nearly to the points of the teeth, so that the teeth may not be liable to gouge while the device is being employed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device'embodying my invention. representinga double or channel row of teeth; Fig. 2, a variation, showing a single row of teeth. I
A is the back, which may be of any suitable shape, but preferably in the nature of a brushback. B is a strap or loop, through which the hand is slipped in the usual manner. 0 is a depending flange extending around the back A.
D represents rows of carrying-teeth. There may be one, two, or more such rows of teeth, though I prefer that there shall be two rows.
E are'brushes, of which there are one or more rows extending across the line of direction of the teeth at an angle thereto.
I prefer the last-named arrangement of the brush with respect to the teeth rather than to locate the teeth in lines parallel with the brush-rows.
The depending flange O is arranged with respect to the teeth D, so that it shall extend tion of brushing.
It will be seen that by this apparatus a horse may be simultaneously brushed and curried, l
the depending flange serving, also, the further purpose of catching the dirt and hair, and not permitting it to fall upon the clothes of the operator, or upon the other portions of the horse.
What I claim isl. The combination, within a flange, G, of currying-teeth and brushes, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A combined curry-comb and brush consisting in the combination, with a back provided with a depending flange attached to the outer edge of the back and encircling the same, of currying-teeth, located .within the flange, and brushes arranged in a direction across the direction of the teeth, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined curry-comb and brush, the combination, with a back provided with a depending flange, of currying-teeth and brushes, the latter secured at their ends to the teeth, and the encircling-flan ge attached to the back, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the back A and depending flange O, of curryingteeth D and brushes E, with or without strap-B, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN GAWTHORPE.
