CURRY-COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,165, dated January 2'7, 1891.

Be it known that I, Lnvr M. DEVORE, a resident of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry- Combs; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in curry-combs of that class in which aflexible back is combined with a series of metal sections fastened to its face, said sections being provided with teeth or serrations.

In general construction and principle of operation the comb embodying my present invention resembles the one shown and described in myUnitedStates patent No. 389,451, from which, however, it differs in various respects, as will appear from the description herein and from the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing, which consists of the single figure showing the working-face of a currycomb, A is a flexible back, preferably of leather, and A is a handle or loop fastened to the upper or rear face thereof.

On the face opposite to the handle are fastened a series of sections B B B B B"", arranged in lines approximately parallel to the line of the handle and separated by spaces sufficient to allow the bending of the back on lines parallel with the handle in order that when the comb is in use and the hand of the operator is in the loop or handle at the back the whole comb may bend with the palm of the operator, its working-face becoming an approximately cylindrical concave. The sections, as shown in the drawing, are of somewhat different forms in order to show the various modifications of the same general type, though, of course, in actual practice any given comb would preferably, though not necessarily, have all its sections of the same form. The first section consists of a series of toothed or serrated rings 1), connected by a bar 0, extending throughout the entire length of the section and provided nearits ends with holes for the reception of rivets R, which fasten it to the back. The section B shows the rings 6 like those shown in the section B, with the exception that each of the rings is formed on the margin of a circular plate or base 0, the various circles being joined by the bars 0, corresponding in function to the barO of the section B. The section B" is like the section B, with the exception that the toothed rings 1) are tangent to each other and form at their point of contact a single-toothed ridge. The section B is the same as the section B",-except that a portion of each of the rings ofthe series has been removed, leaving a series of reversely-placed arcs of about one hundred and eighty degrees, so joined as to form a continuous curve. The section B is the same as the section 13', except that the external curve of the sinuous line of teeth is of smaller radius than the corresponding curves of the section B The teeth of each of the curved ridges may be at the outer margin of the ridge, as illustrated in the sections B B B, or may be at the center thereof, as illus trated in the section B. I consider the arrangement of the teeth at the outer margin of the ridge somewhat preferable to placing them in the center thereof; but the differ ence is not material.

All the forms of sections illustrated in the drawing are provided with teeth arranged in curved lines and all of them are substantially the same in operation. In each form a large part of the teeth are transverse to the line of the handle and to the lines of the sections, and have the same operation as the transversely-arranged teeth of the comb shown and described in my prior patent above referred to. In addition to these transverse teeth, however, each of the sections illustrated herein is pro vided with teeth arranged in lines approximately parallel to the line of the handle; and in fact each section has teeth arranged in lines at every possible angle to the line of the handle. This arrangement of teeth gives a curry-comb made up of either form or section shown and described herein some advantages in use over one having only straight lines of teeth, such as illustrated in my prior patent, and while the general operation of this comb is the same as that of the comb of the prior patent I consider the new arrangement of teeth shown and described herein an improvement upon the other. 1

The manner of connecting the curved lines of teeth in each section is not material, as

any one of the forms shown in the drawingis satisfactory and operative. I prefer, however, the forms illustrated in sections 13 13"", as the sinuous ridge made up of reversely-placed curves, so joined as to be continuons, is strong enough for all practical purposes and at the same time is very light and inexpensive.

Having now described and explained my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isc 1. I11 a curry-comb of the class described, the combination, With a flexible back and a loop or handle attached to'the one face thereof, of a series of sections fastenedto the 0pposite face thereof in lines approximately parallel to the line of the handle, each of said sections being provided with teeth arranged in curved lines, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a curry-comb of the class described, the combination, with a flexible back, of a handle attached to and extending across one face thereof and a series of sections attached to the opposite face of the back in lines approximately parallel to the line of the handle, said sections being provided with teeth arranged in lines made up of a series ofreversely-arranged curves, substantially as set forth.
