UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM RUTHERFORD ADAMS, OF-OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,114, dated December 20, 1887.
Applicaion filed August 3, 1887. Serial No. 246,040. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RUTHERFORD ADAMS, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved OurryOomb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to curry combs for cleaning animals, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device of this character.
The invent-ion consists in certain novel fea tures of construction and combinations of parts of the curry-comb, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of my improved curry-comb. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with the body of the comb reversed, and Fig. 3 is a bottom or face view of the comb with the parts adjusted as in Fig. 2.
The metallic body portion A of the currycomb is made with a longitudinally-ranging square shaft, B, to which are fixed the ends of two thin bowed plates, 0 C, and on the reduced squared ends I) b of the shaft Ban elliptical plate, D, is held outside of and at some little distance from the plates 0 O, and so as to abut the shoulders I) b of theshaft next its ends I) b, to the extremities of which parts bl) an outer elliptical plate, E, is held, so as to be spaced from the plate D about as far as the latter is from the plates 0. The plates D E are each preferably made in two parts riveted together, and the two parts of the plate E are preferably lapped upon each other at the shortest diameter of the comb-body, and are secured by central rivet studs, F F, which have outer shanks and heads, to which the back G and handle strap or loop H of the comb are held, as presently explained.
At one edge each of the elastic comb-plates O D E is provided with teeth I, while the opposite edges, J, of the plates are plain, and as the plates are thin their plain edges form effective scrapers for removing dust, dandruff, water, or sweat from a horse or other animal, while the opposite-toothed edges of the plates may be used like the toothed face of any ordinary curry-comb. By thus providing the' comb-body with both toothed and plain faces, the comb is adapted for thorough work in cleaning animals with economy of time and labor.
The back G of the'comb is preferably made of leather in oval form, corresponding to the general form of the outer comb-plate, E, beyond which the margin of the back projects a little. Across the back is fixed by rivets or otherwise aleather plate, K, the upturned ends 7a 7a of which are fastened by rivets k k to the downturned ends h hot the handle/strap H, which are each provided with a slot or button-hole, L, allowing the ends h h of the handle to be caught upon the opposite rivet-studs, F F, of the comb-body, as clearly shown in the drawings.
It is obvious that by unbuttoniug either end h of the handle strap H from a stud F of the comb-b0dy the handle and back may be swung away from the body on the other stud F and turned thereon to bring either the toothed face I or the plain face .T of the comb to the outside, ready for use when the loose end h of the handleshall have been again buttoned to the combbody.
The oval shape of the curry-comb, together with the ample flexibility of the plates 0 D E, allows the comb to'be used to great advantage in cleaning the legs and protruding joints of animals without irritating them, and the combbody made with toothed and plain faces practically combines two very useful stable requisites in one device, which is cleanly in use and very durable, and is in every way efficient for its intended purposes.
The comb-back G is preferably cut away a little at each side edge, as shown at g g, to allow more convenient reversal of the body of the comb on the handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A curry-comb made with a body portion provided with one toothed face and one plain face, and a handle device held adj ustably to the body to allow either-face of the body to be brought into use, and which handle device consists of a leather plate and a handle-strap, the former being secured to the comb-back and having upturned portions secured to downturned ends of the latter, substantially as herein set forth.
2. A curry-comb made with a body, A, formed of a shaft, B, and plates 0 D E, held thereto and provided with a toothed edge, I, and a p1ain edge, J, and a handle device, held to the body, and which handle device consists of a leather plate and a handle strap, the former being secured to the coinbback and having upturned portions secured to downturned ends of the latter, substantially as herein set forth.
3. A curry-comb made with a body, A, formed of a shaft, B, and a series of plates, C D E, held thereto and having toothed edges I and opposite plain edges J, and studs F F 011 the body, in combination with a handlestrap, l
H, provided with button-holes L, to which the studs F are adapted, substantially as de scribed, for the purposes set forth.
4. A curry-comb made with a body, A, formed of a shaft, B, and a series of plates, 0 D E, held thereto and having toothed edges I and opposite plain edges J, and studs F F on the body, in combination with a back, G, a strap, K, held thereto and having upturned ends k 70, and ahandle-strap, H, having downturned ends h h, secured to the strap K and provided with button-holes L, adapted to the body-studs F, substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM RUTHERFORD ADAMS.
