IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,299, dated April 20, 1875 application filed February 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AoHrLLE F. MIGEON, of \Nolcottville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, ha e invented an Improvement in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
Ourry-combs have been made in a variety of forms, so far as the comb-plates and backs, and they usually have handles and knockerplates. My invention does not relate to either of these parts, as they may be of any known or desired character.
In grasping the currycomb the handle frequently is not used, but the thumb rests against the shank of the handle, while the fingers are against the outside of the comb-plate at the opposite side of the comb; hence the ends of the fingers are liable to come in contact with the horse, and also to slip off the comb.
My invention relates to a grasping-piece, applied at the back of the comb, opposite to the shank of the handle, for facilitating the grasping of the curry-comb for keeping the fingers from contact with the animal, and for furnishing a more firm hold to the hand in using the comb.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the hack of the comb, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
The combs a, back I), and knockers c are of any usual character, and the handle eis upon the shank f. That is fastened to the comb, and it is preferable to employ a bearing-plate, g, at the bend of the shank for the thumb to rest against, or to make the shank broader at this point for the same purpose. My grasping-plate s is at the back of the comb opposite to the handle. It is preferably made with a concave exterior surface, so that the ends of the fingers will rest easily against the Same.
The grasping-plate 8 may be made of the sheet metal of the back out out and turned up at right angles to the back; but I prefer to make it of cast metal, the same being formed with the metal of the shank-plate for the handle, or with the knocker-plates, or it may be a separate piece of metal riveted to the back.
I do not claim a grasping-piece applied to a brush with a back-strap, through which the hand is passed. In my curry-comb there is a handle, and there is not any strap, and the implement is grasped in the hand between the shank of the handle and the piece 8, and the handle can stand in any direction to the hand. No such conditions exist in the brush with the back-strap.
I claim as my invention The combination, with a curry-comb, of a graspingpiece s at the back of the comb, and at the opposite side to the handle 0, for the purposes and as set forth.
Signed by me this 22th day of February,
Witnesses: AOHILLE F. MIGEON.
J. F. CALHOUN, ISAAC W. BROOKS.
