JrrEn STATES GEORGE I?. COLE, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OE TWO-THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO OLEMONS HA'IHAWAY AND WILLIAM O. MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-YOKES.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 124,547, dated March 12,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. COLE, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Yoke; and do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon makin g a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a horseyoke,77 to prevent horses from running and jumping over fences, &c., as vwill be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my entire horse-yoke; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view, part in section, of the lower part thereof.
Arcpresents the yoke, made of wood or other suitable material, and bent in proper shape to tit around the neck of a horse, the ends of the yoke being fastened together by a strap, B, going over the neck. The lower rounded end of the yoke, or that part of the yoke which is against the breast of the horse, is split, as shown, to about the middle of the sides, forming, as it were, two jaws, O O, which are held apart by means of spiral springs a a, surrounding headed bolts or rivets b b passing through both jaws. In the outer jaw are secured nails or sharp-pointed pins d d, the points of which pass into holes through the inner or under j aw; but the pins do not project on the inner side of said jaw unless the two jaws are pressed together. This yoke is connected with the surcingle E by two straps, D D, running one from each side of the neck, and one strap, G, under the breast 5 this latter strap being attached to the outer jaw ofthe yoke.
When the horse attempts to run or jump, the jaws O O will be compressed and the pins thrown forward, and prick the horse till he lets up, leaving, however, the horse free use of his limbs in walking; and it will also keep the horse from rubbing against fences, &c., with the breast, which they most always do before attempting to jump.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-1. The yoke A, constructed, as described, so as to form the jaws O O, which are provided with headed bolts or rivets b b, springs a a, and pins d d, or its equivalent, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the yoke A with jaws O C, having bolts or rivets b b, springs a a, and pins d d, and the straps B, D D, and G, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of December, 1871.
GEORGE l?. COLE.
Vitnesses T. W. ToLcHARD, W. A. BoiRs.
