IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS AND BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,659, dated October 3,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOWARD C. SMITH, of (Joxsackie, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Curry-Comb and Brush 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing' making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference :marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation ot a longitudinal section of niyinvention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.

My invention has relation to curry-combs for the purpose of grooming and cleaning horses and other animals; and it consists in so arranging, alternately, the bristles and metal teeth of the comb that the process of combing and brushing may be performed at the same time.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents an oval board, provided with series of holes in which the bristles are secured in the ordinary manner. The upper surface of this oval board is veneered, so as to protect or cover the ends ofthe bristles and present a finished surface. To the under surface ofthe board A is attached, at equal distances, strips of leather or rubber B, and to these are secured the combs or metallic teeth D, as shown on the drawing, in Fig. 1. In constructing' this comb and brush pains are taken to commence at both ends with the bristles, and extending' the bristles inward to any given distance-say, two inches from the ends; then the strips B, which may be of any elastic material, as leather, rubber, Ste. To this elastic material are secured the metallic combs D, which may be constructed in any ofthe known forms. The inner layers or sections are constructed in the same manner as above described.

Thus the comb and brush is constructed, arranging at alternate spaces the bristles and combs, as represented on the drawing.

It will be readily perceived and understood th at a curry-comb constructed as above described will perform a double function of combing and brushing at the same time, and the elastic material under the combs will yield to any unevenness of surface and throw the combs D a little beyond the bristles.

E represents a pivoted spring-handle attached to the upper surface of the board, and having its bea-rin gs on the washer b. A handle attached in this manner can be easily adjusted, and adapted with convenience to suit the movements of the grooms hand.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-

The horse-brush herein described, having the transverse-channel combs D and the elastic cushions B, substantially as specified.
