PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTUS BUTTERFIELD, OF WARREN, INDIANA.
COMBINED CURRYGOMB AND BRUSH.
Application filed. July 18, 1921.
T 0 all to from it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUs'rUs Bn'rrnnrmrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVarren, in the county of Huntington. and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Currycombs and Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to implements of the type employed in the care of live stock, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved 'currycomb and brush, so combined that a horse or other animal can be brushed and combed with a single operation, thereby effecting a saving of tune and labor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined currycomb and brush embodying a novel means for associating the brush and the currycomb together, the bristles of the brush being so shaped as to cooperate with the currycomb and thus permit the effective use of the combined articles.
A further object is the provision of an improved combined brush and currycomb, embodying a. brush head, a plurality of rowsof brush tufts carried by the head, the active face of the tufts being inclined toward one longitudinal edge of the head, a novel laterally extending plate secured to the head, and toothed bars secured to said plate and. starting at the narrow portion of the brush bristles.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved combined currycomb and brush of the above character, wh1ch is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reason able cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved combined currycomb and brush.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the improved combined brush and currycomb.
Referring to the drawings in detail, where- Specification of Letters Patent.

in similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several yiews, the improved currycomb and brush s designated generally by the letter A and includes the brush head or back 5. This brush head or back 5 is preferably formed of solid wood, although the same of course, may be formed of other material. The lower face of the back 5 is provided with a plurality of pockets 6 for a plurality of longitudinally extending rows of brush tufts or bristles 7. The lower active faces of the rows of bristle or brush tufts 7 are gradually inclined, as at 9, toward one longitudinal edge of the brush back 5. The brush back 5 has connected thereto a laterally extending plate 8, which constitutes the back of the currycomb. This plate 8 is formed of sheet metal, preferably of a resilient nature, and extends slightly below the lower face of the brush head or back 5. The inner longitudinal edge of theplate 5 is provided with an upwardly extending flange 9, which is fitted in abutting engagement with. one longitudinal edge of the head or back 5. The outer end of the flange 9 i provided with an inwardly extending right angularly disposed attaching plate 10, which overlies the outer surface of the brush head or back 5. This attaching plate 10 is secured to the back or head 5, by means of suitable fastening elements such as screws 11. The right angle larly disposed flange 9 is secured. to the longitudinal edge of the back 5 by means of suitable fastening elements, such as screws 12. As shown these screws 12 are arranged relatively near the outer surface of the brush head 5, in order to permit a certain give between the laterally extending plate 8 and the back 5 if found desirable. It can be seen that the active face of the brush top 7 is-inclined upwardly toward the laterally extending plate 8. The lower inner face of the plate 8 has secured thereto the toothed bars 15. As shown the toothed or comb bars 15 are substantially U-shaped in. cross section, and are detachably secured. to the inner or lower face of the plate 8 by means of removable nuts and bolts 16.
If so desired, the longitudinal edge of the brush back or head 5, which is opposite to the flange 9, can be turned arcuately as at 17, in order to conform to the configuration or curvature of the hostlers hand. In use of the improved currycomb and brush, the hand is placed around the brush head and in engagement with the plate 8 and the upstanding flange 9. The device is then used as an ordinary currycomb or brush, and
a the inclined surface of the brush tufts will prising a longitudinally extending head,
brush tufts carried by one" face of. the head, a laterally extending resilient plate carried by one longitudinal edge of thehead, a plurality of longitudinally extending comb bars carried by the. lower surface of aid plate.
plurality of rows of brush tufts carried by the head, the rows of brush tufts having their active faces inclined inwardly, toward one longitudinal edge of the head, a laterally extending plate carried by the mentioned longitudinal edge of the head, and a plurality of longitudinally extending comb bars carried by the inner surface of the plate.
