Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13E, 1915.
Application filed April 14, 1914. Serial No. 831,708.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY COLE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovernents in Double Currycombs and Brushes, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in double curry comb. and brush, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will beexceedingly simple in construction, strong, durable and relatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to form the comb sections of a curry comb from a single strip of spring metal preferably steel, having teeth formed along both edges, producing a double curry comb. v
A further object of the invention 1s to provide a brush section for each comb section, the bristles extending beyond the edges of the comb sections thereby producing a combined curry comb and brush.
A still further object of the invention is to so construct a curry comb that the comb and brush sections will have a spring action when being used.
'With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
ln order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numeral to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a top view of a curry comb made in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a face view, the handle and handle rod being removed. Fig. 4, is a face view of one of the plates, and Fig. 5, is a face view of one of the brush sections.
ln carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a relatively long and narrow strip of spring metal such as steel having teeth 3 formed with both edges, said teeth being preferably formed in a number of sets with a blank space 4 between each set producing a plurality of comb sections 5.
The strip of metal 2 is bent back and f orth upon itself so that the comb sections lie parallel with each other, while the blank portions form alternate end walls. comb section is provided with a central h andle rod opening 6 and a plurality of rivet holes 7. When the metallic strip 2 is bent back and forth upon itself as plainly shown in Fig. 1, the central handle rod openings 6 will all be in alinement for the reception of the handle rod as will be hereinafter explained.
Considering the handle as the back portion of the curry comb, a brush sectionSis mounted upon the front face of each comb section by means of a plate 9, having rivet holes 10 and a central opening 11, said plate lying against the brush section and having rivets passing through the holes l0 and 7 for securing said plate to the comb section with the brush section between said plate and comb section, and when said plates are in position, the central openings 11 therein will be in alinement with the openings 6 in the comb sections.
The brush sections are each formed of a number of bristles 12 glued together in any suitable manner on the center line as at 13. When the brush sections are in place, their ends extend beyond the edges of the comb sections as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so that as the dirt is loosened by the'comb sections, said dirt will be immediately brushed oft' by the brush sections.
14 denotes the handle rod which passes through the central openings 6, in each of the comb sections and the central openings 11 in each of the plates, said rod being snugly fitted in said openings and securely fastened only to the front comb section in any suitable manner, said rod being here shown as provided with a thread 15 on which is mounted two nuts 16, one engaging one face of the comb section and the other engaging one face of the plate, whereby the end of the handle rod is securely held in po sition.
Upon the free end of the rod is adjustably mounted the socket 17 held in any desired adjustment by a suitable thumb screw 18 which passes through the socket and engages the handle rod 14. The socket is provided with an internal stem 19, carrying a handle 20.
ln practice, either set of teeth and brushes may be used by rotating the handle about Each the handle rod as will be readily understood. When the curry comb is being used upon an animal, no injury will be inflicted upon said animal because of the lexibility of the comb which will permit it to readily pass over hard or sore places.
Of course Ido not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
l. A double curry comb and brush, comprising a plurality of comb sections, and alternate integral end members, brush sections mounted upon one face of each comb section and projecting beyond each edge thereof, a handle rod passing through the comb sections and a handle rotatably mounted upon the free end of said rod.
2. In a device of the character described, a plurality of parallel comb sections and integral alternate end members formed from a single strip of spring steel, each of said comb sections having a central opening therein,
teeth formed on both edges of the comb scctions, a brush section mounted upon one face of each of the comb sections, said brush sections projecting beyond each set of teeth, a plate lying against each brush section and riveted to the comb sections, each of said plates being provided with a central opening, a handle rod passing through the central opening in the plates and comb sections, one end of said rod being secured to one of the comb sections, the opposite end of said rod projecting beyond the comb sections, a socket rotatably mounted upon the free end of the handle rod, an integral stem formed with said socket, a handle carried by said stem and a set screw carried by the socket for securing the handle in different adjustments upon the handle rod.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto HENRY COLE.
