UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID WV. LONG, OF SPRINGFIELD, OI-IIO.
PAINT-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,842, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed Tune 20, 1891. Renewed January 26,1893. Serial No. 459,931- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID XV. LONG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Brushes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to paint brush shields, and it consists inthe novel construction and combinationof parts as hereinafter specified and pointed out in the claim.
The main object of the invention is to provide an attachment for paint brushes, which, when the latter are in use, will prevent the paint thereon from getting onto the parts adjacent to the surface being painted.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the shield, which consists of the plate portion B having the contracted orshank portion b. On the front face of this shank portion are riveted or otherwise suitably secured, the convolute spring metal bands or rings a, a, suitably located, as one near the upper and one near the lower portion of the shank. These bands or rings a, a, are of different sizes to fit the tapering handle 0 of thebrush to which the shield is detachably secured by said bands. Owing to their spring metal character, it will be seen that they will accommodate themselves to various sizes of handles, so that one shield may be used interchangeably with several sizes of brushes.
If the shield piece B is made from malleable metal the upper end of the shank portion I) may be bent to form a hook O, by means of which the brush may be suspended from the upper edge of the pail, or which may be engaged with the pail edge to raise the shield when it is desired todip the brush.
If other than malleable metal is employed for the shield plate, a hook 7L may be riveted to the shank portion for this purpose, as shown in Fig. 2. p
The position of the shield at the rear of the brush when in use is shown in the drawings.
Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shield for paint brushes comprising the plate portion B, the shank b, and spring bands or rings secured to said shank, and a hook also on said shank, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DAVID WV. LONG.
