ADJUSTABLE DOUBLE TOOTHBRUSH.
Application filed November 17, 1927. Serial 110,233,755.
' This invention relates to anew and useful improvement inv tooth brushes adapted for the purpose of cleaning the teeth in a more 1 an improved tooth brush embodying certain new and novel features-hereinafter more fully described, claimed'and illustratedi the accompanying drawing.-
Fig. 1 is a-front elevational view of our improved toothbrush,
- Fig.2 is a fragmentary perspective view.
I Fig; '3-is a side .elevational view thereof.-
1 Fig. 4: is an enlarged fragmentary view 'of'the detachable brush member, illustrating'in particular the-means of ,attachlng the same to the brush proper.
Fig. 5 is atop plan view of the detachable -brushmember.
* [Fig.6 is a fragmentary side elevational viewillustrating in particular a further-development of our improved device.
1 Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6., I
- Fig; 8 illustrates another form of the handle of our improved device.
As here emliodied our improved tooth brush comprises a brush" member pro er con sisting of a handle element '10, 0 square transverse section having an extended element 11, of somewhat larger transverse section, preferably circular. The handle element.,l0, is provided with an enlarged head' 12, "orextremity,- formed convex, of semicircular construction, and provided with side extended elements 13 and 14, positioned oppositely. The said enlarged head 12, having its central portion 15, somewhat depressed, so as to form arim at the edges thereof. The said side extended elements 13 and 14, providing a recess 16, or opening, adapted to accommodate the tongue of the person using our improved tooth brush. Bristles 17, such as ordinarily used for tooth brushes, areaflixed to the outer edge of the enlarged head 14:, and are radially downdrawing, we have shown an engaging meme wardlydisposed therefrom.
The removable brush'member, is of similar construction to the enlarged head of the brush member proper, similar reference nu metals denoting similar elements thereof. The said removable brush member is formed concave, so as to engage, or brush the outer to the outer edge of the removable brush member, and are angularly upwardly disposed therefrom. thorough manner and more rapidly, pro
The central portion 15, of the removable brush member, has formed therein an opening 19, adapted to receive the handle element. ,The said central portion 15, is provided with a lug element downwardly extended therefrom. The pawls 22, are pivotally mounted on the pins 23, secured to and extended from the lug element 20. The pawls 22, are providedwith inwardly protruding portions 2%, held in engagement with any desired pair of the notches 25 and 26, by means of the springs 27, mounted on the pins 28, secured to the lug element. The pawls 22,-are provided with extended elements 29,
adapted to be engaged by the thumb or finger of a person, as a means of disengagmg, or removlng the removable brush member proper. The above described construction is suchas will permit the removable brush member to be removably attached to the handleelement of the above mentioned brush member proper, so as to secure any desired space intermediate the bristles afiixed to the said removable brush member and to the said brush member proper, to accommodate the teeth of the person using our improved tooth brush. It is understood that the bristles afiixed to the brush member proper will engage or brush the inner surface of the teeth, adjacent to the throat.
It will be understood that the enlarged head of the handle member is formed or bent on a smaller are than the above mentioned removable brush member, so as to provide a larger clearance at the extremities. The above described. construction is such as will permit same to more readily and easily engage over the teeth to be cleaned, and which at the same time will more securely engage the. teeth at the central portions of the said enlarged head and removable brush member, at which portion greater rigidity is present.
In Figs. 6 and 7, of the accompanying 31, adapted to receive the handle element 10 0f the above mentioned brush member proper, as a meansof slidably mounting the said engaging member 80, thereon. The engaging member 30, has formed therein openings 32 and 33, oppositely positioned, adaptedto receive the extended elements 29 of the above mentioned levers 22. The above described construction is such as will permit the protruding portion 2 of the levers 22, to be securely held in engagement with the notches 25 and 26, formed in the handle element 10, when the engaging member 30, is forcedupwardly by the thumb or finger of the person using our improved device.
In Fig. 8 of the accompanying drawing, we have shown a handle member 34, having formed therein, at or near one extremity thereof notches 25 and 26, adapted to receive the protruding portions 24 of the pawls 22, as a means ol removably attaching the removable brush member to the handle member 34'. The above described construction is snchas will permit the outer surfaces of the teeth to be cleaned or brushed;
Havingthus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent ot the United States is as follows I. In a tooth brush oi the class described, a handle element provided with an enlarged head, bristles'afiixed to and extended angularly downwardly therefrom, a removable bruslnmember having formed therein an opening adapted to receive the said handle element, notchesformed in the said handle element, lugs on the removable member, levers pivotally mounted on pins secured to and extended from the lug elements, said levers held in engagement with the notches formed in the said handle element by means of springs pivotally mounted on pins secured to and extended from the said lug elements of the said removable brush member.
2. In a tooth brush oi the class described, a handle element provided with an enlarged head of curved construction, and having side extended elements, and a central depressed portion for forming a recess to accommodate a users tongue, bristles aflixed to and extendedradially downwardly therefrom, a removable brush member having formedtherein an opening adapted to receive the said handle element, notches formed in the said handle element, lugs on the removable member, l'evers pivotally mounted on pins secured to and extended from the lug elements, said levers held in engagement with the notches formed in the said handle element by means of springs pivotally mounted on pins secured to and extended from the said lug elements of the said removable brush member.
3. In a tooth brush of the. class described, I
pivotally mounted on pins secured to and extended from the said lug/elements, an en gaging member slidably mounted on the 7 said handleelement, openings formed in the said engaging member v said openings being adapted to receivel'the extended elements of the said levers, as a means of. securely holding the inwardly protruding portions of the said levers in engagement with the; said notches formed in the saidhandle-element.'
' In testimony whereof. we'have, affixed our signatures.
" GEZASZEKELY.
