BROOM-GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,733, dated October 4, 1892.

To 1122 whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY JAMES BENNETT, a citizen of England, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Broom- Guards; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to the class of broom attachments; and it consists of the constructions and combinations of devices which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

The object of my invention is to provide a guard for a broom which is adapted to be readily applied thereto and easily removed therefrom for use on another broom, and which when in use will protect and stiffen the straws, prevent them from turning and wearing unevenly, and which can be adjusted up or down to accommodate the wear and to permit the projection of so much of the broom end as may be found best for different uses.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a perspective view of a broom, showing my improved guard applied thereto.

A is the broom-head, and B the handle.

0 is a band, which forms the guard. This is preferably made of metal of sufficient width and shaped to the contour of the broom-head, so that it can embrace it strongly. The upper edge 0 of the guard is preferably made outwardly flaring, in order to ride over the straw ends and avoid catching them as the guard is raised.

Fitted to the handle B is a fixed band D, having a portion of it bent outward to form the vertical ridge (1, provided with a series of holes d. Upon the band D is fitted a sliding sleeve E, having a portion of its surface bent to form the vertical guideway e, which fits over the ridge of the band and serves as a guide to steady the sleeve in its vertical movement and to prevent any lateral or twisting movement, said sleeve having at one side a finger-piece e to enable it to be readily moved up and down. A spring-controlled pawl e is attached to the sleeve E and is designed to engage the holes cl to secure the guard in any of its adjusted positions.

The operation is as follows: By pressing on pawl 6 it becomes disengaged from the holes cl in the ridge of the band D, and the sleeve E may then be moved up and down to adjust the guard C to its proper position, and in this position it can be fixed by allowing the pawl to engage one of the holes 02.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

An improved broom-guard consisting of the hand encircling the broom-head, a band D, fixed to the broom-handle and extended at one side to form a vertical ridge having aseries of holes d, a sleeve on said band D, extended at one side to form a guideway which fits over the ridge of the band, whereby the sleeve is vertically guided and held against lateral or twisting movement, a spring-controlled pawl carried on the guide of the sleeve and adaptedto engage the holes in the ridge of the fixed band, and the wires F, connecting the sleeve with the broom-band, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein described.
