IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,59l, dated December 8, 1874 application led March 9, 1874.
ter and State of New York, have invented a 4 new and useful Improvement in the Cutting Device for Harvesting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, and of the inode or manner of operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved method of holding down the sections in what is called a removable or detachable section knife to the under surface of the slot ofthe finger, so as to make a close shear-cut. This I accomplish by forming a projecting rib in the upper front cornerof the cross-bar, over which slides a recess-piece, e. This piece is riveted to the knife-section, and has a support extending from the back ofthe knife and resting upon the finger-bar.

The sections C C are each riveted to the jacket-pieces E E, which are made of the same length as the sections. The section is riveted upon the jacket in such a manner as to form a projection on one end, which interlocks and upholds the adjoining section. e shows the recess formed on the front end of the jacket, which recess slides upon the projecting rib a of the cross-bar; The iingers are out away so as not to interfere with the free movement of the projection when the knife is at work. The knife-back in this invention is made of round steel, making it necessary to hold each section by itself down upon the surface of the slot. This I accomplish in the manner described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The projecting rib from the front edge of the cross-bar, in combination with the recess or interlocking piece attached. to the knifesection, substantially as described.
