Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LIKELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woody, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Bars for lllowing-lviachines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mowing machines and more particularly to the cutter and finger bars thereof and my object is to provide an improved cutter bar, the knives of which are passed completely through the fingers of the finger bar to remove the particles therefrom and thus avoid clogging and the like.

A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved finger bar, the parts of which may be readily removed and replaced, when desired, and a still further object resides in providing means in connection with the knife bar and finger bar to prevent undue wear therebetween.

Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred -to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the cutter and finger bar of a mowing machine embodying my improvements therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section t-herethrough as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one section of a finger removed from the finger bar. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the wear plate carried on the finger bar with which the knife bar contacts in its movc ment in the finger bar; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section as seen on line 55, Fig. 2.

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the finger bar proper, on the ends of which are provided the enlarged guard fingers 2 and carried on this bar 1,

and arranged at regular intervals between the end fingers 2, are the intermediate guard fingers 3. Each of these fingers consists of a trio of sections. The bottom or main section 4 thereof, which forms a finger in itself, is in the form of a strip, tapered to a point at its outer end, and enlarged at its inner end in plate-like manner, as shown at 5, this enlarged end 5 being secured to the under face of the bar 1, by means of the bolts 6 and nuts 7. The section 1 of this finger is slightly increased in thickness at its outer end from the upper face thereof to provide a shoulder 8 thereon and resting on the upper face of this section, between the shoulder thereof, and the bar 1, is the intermediate platelike section 9 of said finger. This section 9 has the inner end thereof beveled, as shown at 10 to fit in a beveled notch or the like 12, in the under face of the bar 1, at the for ward edge thereof The remaining section 13 of the finger is designed in the form of a strip or plate to rest at its outer end on the strip or plate 9 and against the shoulder S, the same being riveted, as shown at 1 1, at the last mentioned end, to said plate or strip 9 and the section 1 of the finger. This strip or plate section 13 is offset at its outer end to space the same for the greater portion of its length from the plate or strip 9, whereby the knives of the cutter bar may pass therebetween and the inner portion of said strip or plate 13 is again offset, so that the extreme inner end thereof may rest upon the upper face of the bar 1, to be secured thereto by means of one of the bolts and nuts heretofore referred to, as securing the plate section at in position. It must here also be stated that the outer edges of said sections 9 and 13 are beveled to aid in the cutting of the material as the knives are operated therebetween.

Applied to the forward edge of the bar 1, is a wear plate 15 which is provided at regu lar intervals therealong with the right angular tongues or the like 16. These tongues project from the upper edge of the strip or plate 15 and rest on the upper face of the bar 1, between the guard fingers to be riveted, bolted, or otherwise secured to said bar 1.

The cutter bar proper consists of a strip or bar 17, to which are riveted, bolted or otherwise secured the knives or blades 18, the latter having the side edges thereof beveled inwardly toward one another for the greater 7 of the side edges of said blades are straight and abut one another so that the blades extend the full length of the bar 7 in abutting relation to one another and it must here be stated that these blades or knives are secured to the under face of the bar 17 The inner edge of each blade 18 is provided with an upwardly extending flange or projection 19, which contacts with the rear edge of the bar 1 17, so that when all the blades are applied to said bar, a complete strip is provided, on the inner edge thereof. This forms a wear strip for contact with the wear plate or strip 15 above referred to and contained on the bar 1. Thus as it becomes-necessary to replace a blade or knife 18 by a new one, in view of the wear thereon, the wear on the blade 15 will obviously be compensated for by the projection.

From the foregoing description of my improved device, the manner of setting up and applying the same to use will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.

While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is 1. In a mowing machine, a finger bar provided with a plurality of guard fingers thereon, each comprising a lower section secured at its inner end to the under face of the bar proper and having a shoulder adjacent its outer end, an intermediate section resting on the top face of said lower section between the shoulder thereon and the bar proper, and a top section secured at its outer end to the outer end of the intermediate section and the remaining portion of said section being spaced from the intermediate section and secured at its inner end to the top face of the bar roper, a wear plate secured to the outer'ec go of said finger bar proper, a cutter bar having a plurality of blades thereon and slidably disposed in the places between the intermediate and top sections of the fingers on said finger bar, the inner ends of said blades on the finger bar being provided with upwardly extending projections which, together, form a wear plate on the cutter bar for contact with the aforesaid wear plate on the finger bar.

2. In a mowing machine, a finger bar provided with a plurality of fingers each consisting of a lower plate-like section secured to the under face of said bar and having a shoulder adjacent its outer end, the under face of said bar proper at the forward edge thereof being beveled, whereby to provide notches at points therealong to which said lower plate-like sections of the fingers are secured, an intermediate section resting on the lower section between the shoulder and the bar, the inner end of the intermediate section being beveled 011 its upper face to sit snugly in the notch formed by the beveled under face of the finger bar, an upper section secured at its outer end to said intermediate and lower sections, said upper section being spaced for the remaining portion of its length from the intermediate section and secured at its inner end to the top face of said finger bar, and a cutter bar having a plurality of blades thereon and slidably disposed in the space between the intermediate and top sections of the fingers on said finger bar.
