J. W. S'HULIL.
HARVESTER CUTTER BAR. No. 366,742.. Patented July 19,,1887.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
JACOB XV. SHULL, OF SPRING CHURCH, PENNSYLVANIA.
HARVESTER CUTTER-BAR.
SPECIFICATION fomzing part of Letters Patent No. 366,742, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed February 23, 1887. Serial No. 228,492. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J .icor W. SIIULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Ch urch,in the county ofArmstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester Cutter- Bars; and I do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object ofthe invention is to construct the cutter-bar of a harvester so that the cutters will he held securely together when in use, and yet may be easily removed or put in place.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing my improved cutter-bar with the cutters secured in position; Fig. 2, a detail view of the bottom plate ofthc cutter-bar; Fig. 3, a similar viewof the top plate; Fig. 4, a detail view of the cutter-bar head, and Fig. 5 a similar view of one of the cutters. Fig. 6 is a crossseciion on line mm of Fig. 2,showing the undercut rear wall of groove.
In the drawings, A represents the cutter-bar as an entirety, consisting of the bottom plate, B, top plate, 0, and cutter-bar head 1'), the latter being held to the bottom B by the screws E E,which pass through both and receive the end nuts, F F.
The cutterbar head I) has a pivoteye, d,
for the pitman, which reciprocates the cutterand an undercut rear wall, so that the correspondinglyshaped rear extensions, 1, having shoulders r/, oftheharvester-cutters G, may be put into the groove from the top.
The top C has a downward-projecting and undercut end, 0, which fits snugly over the beveled end b of the bottom, so as to form therewith a tight joint.
The cutters C have parallel straight sides, so that they may fit close] y together between the outer end, 0, and a fast piece, H, at the in ner end of the cutter-bar. I may use a clamp screw, 1, in the end 0, to press the cutters closely together, although it is not absolutely necessary.
In each side of the extensions 9, I make a semicircular notch, so that the clampscrew J, which passes through the pieces B C, may also pass between any two of the cutters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cutter G, having the extension 1 below the plane thereof, and provided with a beveled edge, shoulder g, and notches g, in combination with a cutter-barcorrespondingly constructed to receive it, as shown and de scribed.
2. In a cutter-bar, the bottom plate, B, having one beveled end and made with a longitudinal groove, the top plate, 0, having the undercut end 0, the screws-1*], and the nuts F, in combination with the cutter-head D,provided with a pivot-eye, l, shoulders d d", and extension (2, as shown and described.
3. A longitudinally-grooved cutter-bar the groove of which has aperpendicular front and an undercut rear wall, in combination with cutters having extension 9, and with means for fastening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB \V. SHULL.
