KNIFE BAR No. 531,987. Patented Jan. 1, 1895 cams Perms co, woraumo UNITED STATES PATENT @rricn.
ZADOO E. VVISEMAN, OF GANDEEVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
KNIFE-BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,987, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed February 2, 1894- Serial No. 49 8,882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZADOG E. \VISEMAN, of Gandeeville, in the county of Roane and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Knife-Bars; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,'reference being had the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved knife bar; and the object of the same is to provide an improved means for securing the several knives of a bar in proper position as well as the pitman eye.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is alongitudiual sectional view of the bar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bar proper with the knives removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the knives. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the pitman eye.
A is the bar proper having a dovetail depression B in its top which is open at its inner end where the knives are inserted. Upon the under side of each knife 0 is a dovetailed lug D which fits the depression. The logs are substantially the same length as the knives, but are positioned thereon inward from one of the knife ends and projecting from the opposite end as shown so that when in position each knife overlaps the lug of the knife next adjacent, thus securely binding them in proper place.
The inner end of bar A is squared to form shoulder E, and adapted to fitthereover is recessed lug F on end of eye section G. The latter extends inward longitudinally with the cutter bar and is provided with the tenon H on its under side to fit depression B, and this tenon is set back from the end of the eye section so that the latter may lap over the log of the last knife of the series as shown. A bolt I projects from shoulder E upon which nut J is run to hold the eye and knife sections firmly in position. A slight amount of extra tailed block on its under side to snugly fit said groove, and the knife keeper composed of the eye section having the dovetailed block to fit and close the open end of the groove and the downwardly extending end embracing the end of the bar and locked thereto, difiers materially and advantageously from cutter bars heretofore in use wherein the barhas upward projections arranged to hook in each tooth, a key being employed as a keeper, or wherein the bar has a rectangular groove having two opposite inward projections for each blade, each blade having a perpendicular sided divided tenon on its under side formed with a 'slot and under cut portion to receive said projections to hold the blade when dropped in the groove and pushed laterally, and a keeper embracing the end of the bar to engage and hold the end blade.
My improved knife bar is so formed and arranged that the dovetailed groove is closed throughout its entire length by the blade eye section so that the strength of the bar is greatly increased, and no dirt can enter the groove and thereby clog the same, and the groove and interior parts are preserved from rust. Furthermore' the manner of uniting the eye section to the bar increases the strength of the device and in no way weakens the bar or section and enables the bar to be economically made with no accurate adjustments; also I make no broad claim herein for a bar having a dovetailed groove and blades haw ing dovetailed blocks therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
