Description
Y'UNTTE SATES AT OFFICE.
WLLIAM. D. WHEAT, OF JAMESTOWN, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELMER WHEAT, OF JAMESTOWN, KENTUCKY.
HARVESTER-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters lf'atent.
Patented Dee. 3, 1907.
Application filed February l. 1907. Serial No. 355.307.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. WHEAT, citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Russell and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester- Cutteis, of which the following is a specificaplaced by a new one, and a further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of cutter bar of which the teeth or sections are interlocked when in operative position, each tooth of the series locking the one next to it in place, all as will be hereinafter specically described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a cutter bar embodying features of my invention, parts being broken away 3 Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cutter bar with the covering strip removed; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view on an enlarged scale of one end of the supporting beam.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated 1n all the views of the drawings by the. same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the supporting beam which is provided on one face with a series of forwardly opening recesses 2 which are provided with side walls 3 oblique to lines perpendicular to the beam, the walls of one recess being separated from the walls of the next adjacent recess by means of obliquely extending lugs 4. Each tooth in the series of teeth, except the last, is provided with an offset extension 5,
the side walls of which are oblique to the general plane or direction of the teeth to correspond with the side walls of the recesses and each offset 5 forms with the main portion of the tooth of which it is a part, a rearwardly facing shoulder 6 and an opposite forwardly facing shoulder 7. It will thus be seen that as one tooth after another is placed within the recesses 2 in the line or series, the rearwardly facing shoulder 6 of one tooth will project over the forwardly extending shoulder 7 of the next preceding tooth. By this means, all of the teeth of the cutter bar are locked together, and to secure said teeth in place and insure that this interlocking connection should be effective, I provide a locking strip 8 which extends over the offsets of all the teeth and is riveted or otherwise secured to the supporting beam l. The last tooth at the inner end of the series is provided with a shoulder 6a corresponding to the shoulders 6 of the other teeth, but is not provided with any forwardly facing shoulder, such as the shoulders 7. This last tooth is formed with a screw hole into which a screw 9 fits, said screw 9 working through the locking strip 8 and into the said tooth. Or the last tooth may be secured in place by any desired fastening means.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is evident that all of the teeth are interlocked, and that in order to remove any one tooth, it is only necessary to unscrew the end tooth, whereupon the other teeth may be taken out one after the other, and the Worn tooth thus reground or replaced by a new one.
It vill be seen that the construction is very durable and very efficient for the purposes herein set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A cutter bar consisting of a supporting beam provided with forwardly opening recesses disposed obliquely to lines perpendicular to the beam, a locking strip secured to said beam and adapted to cover said recesses, teeth rovided with offset extensions, the side waffe of which are disposed obliquely to the direction in which said teeth point, said extensions fitting into said recesses, each of said teeth except one being ing shoulder of the next tooth, and means provided with a rearwardly facing shoulder7 for securing this last named tooth in place. 10 and an opposite forwardly facing shoulder, In testimony whereof I aflixrny signature and the rearwardly facing shoulder of one in presence of two witnesses.
