GUTTER BAR. No. 453,203. Patented June 2,1891.
F ,1. I I 77 l 2457.2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD F. MCELVEE, OF DUNMORE, IVEST VIRGINIA.
CUTTER-BAR.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,203, dated June 2, 1891.
' Application filed August 30, 1890. Serial No. 363,529. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD F. MCELWEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunmore, in the county of Pocahontas and State of IVestVirginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specication.
This invention has relation to harvesters, and has for its object the provision of a removable tooth and a novel construction whereby the same may be quickly attached to or detached from the cutter-bar.
This invention therefore consists in the peculiar construction of the cutter-bar and teeth of a harvester and the means for fastening the same together, as more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top View of a portion ofa cutter-bar with one of the teeth in position therein. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on line :n .fr of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a top View of one of the teeth, and Fig. 4 a bottom view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of a portion of acutter-bar with the tooth removed.
A represents the cutter-bar, having recesses B, which are formed with undercut or dovetail sides b b.
O represents the cutter-tooth, having the neck D and the dovetail or slanted edges e e ff and the holes g g. l
To the under side of the cutter-bar A and directly underneath the recess B is attached, by means of a rivet or screw, a short stiff fiat spring II, having attached thereto near each end a pin or stud h h, said pins or studspassing upward through holes t' 'i in the cutterbarl and being of sufficient length to extend to the upper side of the cutter-bar. The ends of the pins orstuds h 7L are beveled toward the front of the cutter-bar. AS will be more clearly seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings, that portion of the under side of the cutter-tooth between the holes g g and the rear edge of the tooth is beveled off, in order to facilitate the placing of the tooth in position on the cutterbar.
' In order to insertthe teeth in the bar, all that is required is to place each tooth in front of a recess' and push it home. The beveled top of the pins impinging against the beveled bottom of the tooth are pressed down, and the latter slides over the pins until the holes in the tooth are directly over the pins, when the pins are forced upward by the spring H into the holes g g, thereby securely fastening the tooth in position in the bar.
When it is desired to remove one of the teeth, the pins are pressed down and the tooth pulled out of the recess in the bar.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a cutter-bar and a removable tooth sliding transverselyin undercut ways in the bar, of a spring attached to the under side of the bar and provided with pins or studs which extend through the bar and the tooth, said pins or studs having their tops beveled, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with cutter-bar A, having the recesses B, with converging undercut sides l), of the cutter-tooth C, having the wedge-shaped and dovetailed neckD andthe holes g g, and the short stiff iat spring H, having attached thereto near each end a pin or stud h, which passes upward through holes i in the cutter-bar and through the holes in the tooth, the said spring being attached to the bottom of the cutter-bar and the pins beveled on their upper ends, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1890. V
BERNARD F. MCEIVEE.
