B. HERRINGTON.
' V KNIFE.
Patented ot'. 16, 1894.
NITED STATES PATENT f OFFICE.
EPHRAIM I-IERRINGTON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASS IGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. GREENWOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
KNIFE,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,491, dated October 16, 1894.
Application filed March 8, 1894. fierial No. 502,875- (No model.) 1
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM HERRINGTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
lVly invention relates to knives which are constructed to be opened and closed and are provided with detachable blades, and consists in certain improvements in the construction of such knives, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a side view of a knife constructed according to my invention, a part of the handle being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view,
showing the back spring of the knife and other details. Fig. 3 is a cross section of j the knife. Fig. tshows the position of the handle and blade when the blade is to be removed. Fig. 5 shows a modification in the construction of the knife.
A designates the knife-handle, in one of the side pieces of which is a recess a, for the purpose hereinafter stated.
1) indicates the back spring of the knife, one end of which bears against the blade B to keep it in position when open or closed.
The spring b is made in two parts which are pivotally connected at 0, each part being provided with a slot 6, and through the slots 6, are passed pins or rivets d, which connect the side pieces of the handle and retain the spring.
0 indicates an eccentric which is jou rnaled in the side pieces of the handle A, one journal,
f, of the eccentric extending into the recess a,
the latter being formed with a seat for an arm g, which is pivotally connected with and extends laterally from said journal f.
The blade B is formed with a hook it, on the end which is connected with the handle A, and has a shoulder 2', so that the blade may be firmly secured to and readily detached from the handle as desired. Two pins or rivets m m are passed through the handle, near the end connected with the blade, and the blade is hooked to the outer rivet m, and turns thereon when the knife is being opened or closed. When the knife is closed, the shoulder 11 is in position against the rivet m, and prevents the blade from getting unhooked-see Fig. 1-and when the knife is open, the blade being in position shown in Fig. 2, the pin, m, prevents the blade from being pushed into the handle.
When the eccentric C is in position shown in Fig. 1, with the arm g in its seat, the middle portion of the spring is pressed outward by the eccentric, so that the spring tightens the connection of the bade with the handle; and when it is desired to detach the blade from the handle, the eccentric may be turned from the spring by raising the arm 9 from its seat and moving it along on the raised ed e of the recess at until said arm rests in a notch n made in the handle, this movement causing the spring to loosen its bearing on the blade, and the latter may then be turned to the position shown in Fig. 4, and then pushed outward from the handle and detached. therefrom.
1n the modification shown in Fig. 5, the eccentric, G", is provided with a slot or notch 0, like the head of a screw, in its journal and maybe turned by means of a screw driver, one being usually placed in a seat formed for it in the end of the handle, as seen at 8. When the eccentric C is in position with the notch 0' parallel with the handle or nearly so, the springb' is tightened on the blade, B, and by turning the eccentric so thatthe notch c, registers with a notch or groove 0 in the handle, the spring may be pressed from the blade which is secured to the handle by means of a screw (1', which may be removed by using the screwdriver and the blade may be thus detached.
I claimt 1. The combination with a knife handle, having two rivets, m, m, fixed in said handle near one end, one rivet being in advance of the other, of a blade having a hook on its butt-end to connect with the rivet, m, and turn thereon, and also having a shoulder, t',
adapted to connect with the rivet, m, when the blade is'closed, said rivet,m', also forming an abutment for said hook when the blade is open, and a spring to bear on the attached end of the blade, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. Thecombination with a knife handle, of a back spring made in two parts which are pivotally connected, each of said parts being provided with a slot, securing pins passed; through said slots, a removable blade, and an eccentric, journaled in said handle and constructed to be turned so as to press against said spring at its pivotal connection, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EPHRAIM HERRINGTON.
