PHILLIP HENRY BIEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NEEDLE FOR GRAIN-BINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,769, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filerl May 23,1903. Serial Nol58,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILLIP HENRY BIEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Needles for Grain-Binders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a top View. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the knife. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the knife-seat.
The invention relates to binding-needles for harvesters; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the lettera, designates the body portion of the needle, having the point b. to which is secured the detachable knife 0. The point I) is of conical form and is provided with a seat-cleft 61, extending through it and having in its deepest portion or bottom oifsets e c at the ends of a taper form seat g. The forward ends h of the cheeks of the point are notched, usually in concave form, as indicated, to engage the shoulders of the point-knife. This steel knife 0 consists of a conical point portion Z and a thin plane body Z, the Whole being of triangular form and a little broader than the point 5 of the needle, so that the cutting edges m of the body will project outward or stand out from the conical point of the needle. The heel or base of the knife is formed with a middle notch n, adapted to fit neatly the seat g of the cleft in the needle-point, the wings or extensions 'w at the ends of this notch fitting the offsets e of the base of the cleft. The knife-point Z has shoulders 25, usually of convex form, presenting rearward to engage the concave ends of the cheeks of the needle-point. The knife is secured in position by its engagement with the seat and 01f sets of the cleft and by the pin or screw 8, the ends of which should be countersunk in the walls of the point. The knife can be readily removed for sharpening or repair.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination with a cleft pointed harvester-needle, of a removable shouldered point-knife, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a cleft harvesterneedle,of a triangular-shouldered point-knife, having a notched base, and means for attaching said knife to said needle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILLIP HENRY BIEMAN.
Witnesses:
PHILIP J. KOLB, ADDIS BRADY.
