CHARLES PEARSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CUTTING APPARATUS 0F MOWING-MACI-IINES AND I-IARVESTERS.
Specification of Letters E'atent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,649.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PnARsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Apparatus of Mowing-Machines and Harvesters, of which the following is a' full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to the cutting apparatus of mowing machines and harvesters, and in particular to an improved construction of knife head attachment to be secured to the knife bar; its object being to provide a lighter, cheaper and more durable structure.
I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a prepared blank of soft plate steel representing an initial step in the construction of my improved knife head;
Fig. 2 is a like View showing a portion of the blank cut away and turned vertically relative to the body thereof;
Fig. 3 is a like view designed to illustrate the manner of forming the spherical bearing member;
Fig. 41 is a side elevation of Fig. 8;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the rivet used to complete the knife head; and
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view showing the improved knife head connected with a pitman.
The same reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
The blank as shown in Fig. 1 is made of relatively soft material, and includes a tang portion 6 terminating in a widened head 7 extending forward and rearward on opposite sides of the tang. 8 represents alined openings along the body of the blank whereby the head may be secured to a knife having sections. 9 represents an enlarged opening at the front side of the head, 10 a vertically disposed flange member cut away or struck up from the front side of the head around the opening 9, and then turned at right angles to the plane of the body of the blank, 11 a rivet of good wearing material, preferably made of high carbon steel, having a semi-spherical head 12, and its body inserted in the opening 9 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The body of the rivet is then upset against the opposite side of the flange 10 in a manner to form the other half 13 of a complete spherical bearing member carried by the flange 10. In this manner all the advantages of a' hard, good wearing bearing are provided, and at the same time the cost is greatly decreased.
Having shown and described one forng which my invention may assume in practice, I do not desire that it be confined to the specific details of the structure as illustrated, it being understood that changes may be'made in its form without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cutting apparatus, a knife head including a body, an upstanding flange carried by said body, a rivet inserted in said flange and having its opposite ends upset against said flange to form a bearing mem- 2. In a cutting apparatus, a knife head including a longitudinally disposed body, a vertically disposed flange carried by said body and provided with a transverse opening, a rivet received by said opening and having its opposite ends upset against said flange to form a spherical bearing member.
3. In a cutting apparatus, a knife head including a longitudinally disposed body terminating in a widened head, a flange cut from said head and turned at an angle to the plane thereof and provided with a transverse opening, and a member received by said opening and carrying at its opposite ends outwardly projecting semi-spherical bearing surfaces.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES PEARSON.
