O. B. OORBIN. SGISSORS SHARPBNBR.
No. 559,570. Patented May 5, 1896.
' (w mssms V mm M Ma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. CORBIN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I'IALF TO WILLIAM T. LAMOREAUX, OF SAME PLACE.
SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,570, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed ay 18, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CORBIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Scissors-Sharpener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful scissors-sharpener; and the invention consists in the combination, with aplate, of a hardened rod of metal, preferably steel, whereby the edges of the scissors or shears may be swaged, so that in using the same they will meet smoothly, forming a shear cut; and the objects of the invention are, first, to furnish a cheap and efficient device for sharpening scissors and shears, and, second, to so construct the device that the plate and rod combined with the plate will form a swage for forming the edge of the scissors or shears in proper shape. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved scissors-sharpener, showing the arrangement of the steel rod with the plate and the means for attaching the same to the plate. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
A A represent the plate. This plate is provided with projections B B, said projections B B being each provided with an edge D, said edges D being set at the proper angle to the side of the plate to form or swage the edge of the scissors or shears to the proper shape, the same acting in combination, however, with the steel rod or plate E.
E is attached to the face of the plate by means of lugs F F, or other suitable means. The outer sides of the rod E should project so as to come in contact with the edge of the scissors being sharpened and assist, with the Serial No. 549,807. (No model.)
projections on the plate, in swaging the scissors to the proper shape.
It will be understood that in using my device both blades of the scissors are sharpened at once, the same being shut, so that the in ner edges of the scissors come in contact with the edges D D, the outer edges with the outer edges of the main plate A A, and the extreme edge or point striking the hardened rod E. By this means a pair of scissors or shears can be sharpened very quickly and very effectually.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A scissors -sharpener, consisting of a plate A having lateral projections upon its opposite edges, and a hardened rodattached to one side of said plate and extending at an angle to the operative edges of the said projections, substantially as described.
2. A scissors-sharpener, consisting of a plateA provided upon its opposite edges with lateral projections B, B, having straight edges D, D, lying in the same plane, and a hardened rod E attached to one side of said plate and extending at an angle to the said edges D, D, substantially as described.
3. A scissors-sharpener, consisting of a plate A provided upon its opposite edges with lateral projections B, B, having straight edges D, D, lying in the same plane and at obtuse angles to the opposite edges of said plate, and a hardened rod E attached to one side of said plate and extending at an angle to said edges D, D, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two wit- IIGSSGS.
CHARLES B. OORBIN. [n s.] Witnesses EDWARD TAGGART, CHRISTOPHER HONDELINK.
