' UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD WILKINSON, OF SHEFFIELD, COUNTY OF YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN S H EEP-SH EARS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,610, dated August 12, 1879; application filed May 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILKINSON, of Sheffield, in the county of Yorkshire, in England, have invented new and Improved Shears, chiefly applicable for shearing sheep, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in an improved light and cheap form of shears, the blades, shanks, and bows of which are composed of flat steel, the whole being (so to say) in one plane with the exception of the bow, which is curved sidewise, either in one regular or irregular curve, for the purpose of giving elasticity to the said bow. As a modification of the above-described pair of shears the parts of the shanks griped by the hand have handles of wood, horn, on
other suitable substance.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan of a pair of shears constructedaccording to this invention, and Fig. 2 shows an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
By reference .to these drawings (and the above description) it will be seen that the blades A A, shanks B B, and how 0 are constructed of flat steel, (or other suitable substances,) the points of the blades marked D D being turned in contrary directions to prevent the blades closing too far onto one another, and prevent the handles B B coming too near together, the pair of shears shown by Figs. 1 and 2 having wood handles fixed to the shanks. The elasticity of the shears is produced by cnrvin g the how 0 sidewise, as clearly shown by Fig. 2.
A suitably-formed extra spring (or extra springs) can be employed with theabove-described improved shears, as is now done with shears of ordinary construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The improved shears, wherein theblades and shanks are composed of flat steel in one plane, and with the bow bent sidewise, substantially as shown and described.
ED WARD WILKINSON.
