SCISSORS SHARPENING DEVICE Filed March 9, 1949 INVENTOR. MAPWAL J. Foam/LLB Patented F eb. 28, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE '8 Claims. (01. TSP-89.2)
This invention relates in general to devices for sharpening cutting tools, and, more particularly, to scissors sharpening devices of the type embodying as sharpening means a round, tempered and preferably highly polished steel pin. Scissors sharpening devices of this type, which have their steel or sharpening pin rigidly mounted in a fixture or handle member, can effect proper sharpening of bevel-edged scissors blades only when the taper of the bevel edged blades extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the steel or cutting pin so as to provide a line contact of the beveledged blades with the steel pin, which line contact is highly important for proper and uniform sharpening of the sc ssors blades; however, such line contact cannot be effected with present day scissors sharpening devices which do not compensate for substantial variances of the taper angle of beveled edges of blades of scissors of various makes and-sizes.
' The general object of the present invention is the provision of a simple, neat and inexpensive scissors sharpening device having a shiftably sup-. ported sharpening steel pin adapted to be automatically aligned during scissors sharpening operations with the scissors blade shearin angle of the scissors to be sharpened, so as to efiect in scissors sharpening operations a line contact of the tapered cutting edges of the scissors blades with the sharpening steel pin of the scissors sharpening device.
Anot er object of the invention is the provision of a simple, neat and inexpensive scissors sharpening device having a sharpening steel pin mount d to freely rotate in a plane through the longitud nal axis of the pin around an axis extended through said pin, midway thereof, and in J rectangular relation to said plane, the sharpening steel pin being adapted to be automatically rotated during scissors sharpening operations so as to effect a line contact of the tapered cutting edges of the scissors blades with the sharpening.
steel pin of the scissors sharpening device.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple, neat and inexpensive scissors sharpening device of the type described, in which the sharpening steel pin supports at its opposite ends curved shoe members and in which these shoe members are guided in curved guide ways of a fixture or handle member supporting said sharpening steel pin to permit in scissors sharpening operations automatic shifting of the pin and eifect a line contact of the tapered cutting edges of scissors to be sharpened with the sharpening steel pin of the device.
The above and additional objects and. novel features of construction, combination and relations of parts by which the objects in view have been attained, will appear and are set forth in detail in the course of the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of thespecification illustrates a certain practical embodiment of the invention, but it will be apparent as the specification proceeds that the struc turamay be modified and changed in various ways without departure from the true spirit and broad scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
, Fig. l is a. front view of a. scissors sharpening device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2; is a side View of the device shownin Fig. 1 with a pair of scissors positioned to be sharpened by the device;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary transversal sectional view through thedevice, the section being taken on.line-3-3 of Fig.2;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view partlyin elevation taken on line 4- of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sharpening steel member of the device.
.Referring'now more in detail to the exemplifled form of the invention shown in the drawing. reference numeral 2 denotes a scissors sharpen ing. device embodying a support member 3 and a steel pin member 4 supported thereby. The sup-q port member 3 includes a body portion 5, the top end portion'of which is shaped to form a hand grip 6, and a bar member I attached to one side of body portion 5 by screws 8. The main body portion and the bar member have their opposed.
faces recessedso as toform support member. 3
with an elongated, vertically arranged slot' 9'. In addition. main body 5 and bar member 1 have their opposed faces centrally grooved with secs tional circular grooves to provide said body portion and bar member with sectional circular, channels; 10 and H, rotatably supporting and guiding/thev steel pin in-ember 4' so as to permit its rotation ina plane through the axis of the sharpening pin member around an axis extended through said pin member and rectangularly related to said plane.
To facilitate rotation of the sharpening pin member 4 in the supporting and guiding chan-v such pin member has attached ends sectional cylindrical shoechannels In and H to guide the sharpening I; pin member, during sharpening operations, and,
nd 04 which are sized and-curved;
arranged in said supporting member and to support the pin to intersect said elongated slot in symmetrical relation with respect thereto.
5. A scissors sharpening device comprising an elongated supporting member having a slot longitudinally thereof, a sharpening pin member shiftably supported by said supporting member, and cooperating means on said supporting member. and'sharpening pinmember to support the same in all possible positions in intersecting symmetrical relation with respect to the slot in said 4 supporting member.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A scissors sharpening device comprising 'a. supporting member having an elongated slot axially thereof, an elongated sharpening pin member, and supporting means for said pin member arranged to permit rotation of said pin member in said supporting member in a plane which includes the longitudinal axis of said pin member and around an axis extending through the center of the longitudinal axis of said pin member and in perpendicular relationship to said plane.
j 2. A scissors sharpening device comprising a supporting member having an elongated slot axi allythereof, an elongated sharpening pin member, and supporting means for said pin member to freely, fioatingly support same for movements in a plane which includes the longitudinal axis of said pin member and around an axis extendingthrough the center of the longitudinal axis of said pin member and in perpendicular relationship to said plane. 3. A scissors sharpening device comprising a supporting member having an elongated slot axially thereof, an elongated sharpening pin member, and a sectional cylindrical guideway' freely,
shiftably supporting said sharpening pin member, said sectional cylindrical guideway being arranged in said supporting member and inter-' secting said slot midway thereof in symmetrical relation with respect thereto, to permit proper automatic positioning of the sharpening pin dur-' ing scissors sharpening operations.
4. A scissors sharpening device comprisingan elongated supporting member having a handle at one end and a friction member at its other end, an elongated slot formed in said elongated member longitudinally thereof, a sharpening pin member shiftably supported by said supporting member, and guideways for said pin member Such movements of the scissors and blades efiect automatic rotation of sharpening 6. A scissors sharpening device comprising an elongated supporting member having an elongated slot longitudinally thereof, and a sharpening pin member shiftably supported at its opposite ends in said supporting member, said supporting member including sectional cylindrical recesses adjacent to said slot for the opposite ends of said sharpening pin member arranged and sized to permit free shifting of said sharpening member in intersecting symmetrical relation with respect to said slot.
7. A scissors sharpening device comprising an elongated supporting member having an elongated slot longitudinally thereof, and a sharpening pin member shiftaloly supported at its opposite ends in said supporting member, said supporting member having sectional cylindrical recesses adjacent to said slot arranged in symmetrical relation with respect thereto, and said sharpening pin member including mounted on its opposite ends shoe members fitting said cylindrical recesses and seated therein to permit free shifting of said sharpening member in symme rical relation with respect to said slot.
8. In a scissors sharpening device including a supporting member and a. sharpening pin member, an elongated slot in said supporting member, and shiftable guiding and supporting means for said sharpening member arranged to permit shifting of said sharpening pin symmetrically with respect to said slot.
