Description

PATENT OFFICE..
A. S. AGKER, OF ALBION., NEW YORK.4
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,809, dated February 27, 1866.
To all whom #may concern:
Be it known that I, A. S. AGKER, of Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Pitmen-Couplings for Grain and Grass Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line x fr, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved manner of connecting the pitmen ot' grain and grass harvesters with the sickle, whereby the pitman-piu, as well as the eye in which the pin is fitted, will be protected from wear, noise, and play of the pin in the eye prevented, straining and cramping of the eye and pin and the consequent breaking of the sickle-shank avoided.
The invention consists in the insertion ot" a thimble of india-rubber7 leather, or othersutable elastic or yielding material in the eye, as hereinafter set forth.
A represents the shank ofthe sickle, and B a head attached thereto,'in which a circular -hole is made to form an eye to receive the pin C of the pitman D.
E is a thimble of india-rubber, leather, or other suitable elastic or yielding material, which is tted in the eye, the interior of said thimble being sufficiently large to receive the pin C,'the latter fitting snugly in the .former and secured therein by a key, F, which passes through the pin C near its outer end. By this means both the pitman-pin and the eye are protected from wear, all play of the pin inthe eye prevented, and the sudden jerking and cramping of the pin in the eye, which frequently causes the breaking of the sickleshank, avoided.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The thimble E, constructed of india-rubber, leather, or other suitable elastic or yielding material, fitted in the eye of the sickle-bar to receive the pitman C, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
