PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application filed May 14, 1915. Serial No. 28,135.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE S. JOHN- STON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glendive, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows, one of its objects being to provide a plow share having a removable point anda removable cutting portion along the front of the share.
A further object is to provide a structure of this character the point of which constitutes a means for holding the cutting blade to the share.
Another object is to provide a plow the detachable parts of which will not become accidentally detached when in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of a plow share embodying the present improvements, a portion thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the plow share and showing the removable point locked in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said portion of the plow share, the landside being shown in section and the point removed. Fig. 4: is an inverted perspective view of the point. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutting blade.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the plow share provided with a longitudinal groove 2 in the front or advancing edge thereof, there being a landside 3 below one side portion of the share. This landside extends under and throughout the length of a wing 4 provided at the front of the landside portion of the share, this wing being extended laterally beyond the grooved edge of the share, as
shown at 5 and being thinner than the share so that an obliquely disposed shoulder 6 is provided along the rear portion of the wing. Formed in the bottom of the share 1 close tongue 11 is designed to fit snugly within the groove 7 and is tapered toward its rear end to correspond with the contour of the groove. Tongue 11 extends rearwardly from the point 12 of the plow and this point is adapted to abut against the forward edge of the wing 1. An apron 13 extends rearwardly from the point and overhangs and is spaced from a portion of the tongue 11,
this apron being designed, when the tongue 11 is seated in groove 7, to fit upon the wing 4 and to abut against the shoulder 6. When the point is properly positioned relative to the share 1, the nose 9 on lever 8 is seated in the notch 10 so as to prevent the tongue from being pulled forwardly out of groove 7. Any desired means may be employed for holding the lever 8 against accidental movement. For example, a small stud or projection 1d may be formed upon the bottom face ,of the share and the lever 8 caused to ride thereover while moving to locking position;
7 Extending across that end of groove 2 remotefrom the point is a holding pin'15 and this pin is detachably engaged by the slotted end 16 of a rib 17 which is formed longitudinally along the inner or rear edge of an elongated blade 18. Rib 17 is designed to fit snugly within the groove 2 and extends throughout the length thereof and the blade 18 is adapted to be engaged at one end by the apron 13, as shown in Fig. 1, this apron cooperating with the pin 15 to prevent the blade 18 from becoming displaced relative to the share 1.
It will be obvious that should the point 12 become worn or broken, a new one can be substituted readily therefor, and the same is likewise true of the blade 18.
What is claimed 1. The combination with a plow share and a landside therebelow, and a wing extending forwardly from the share, said landside being extended under and throughout the length of the wing, the upper face of the wing being below the surface of the upper face of the share to form an obliquely dis-' posed shoulder, there being a dovetail groove in the bottom face of the share and close to the landside, said groove diminishing in depth toward the rear end thereof, of a point adapted to abut against the forward edge of the wing, an apron extending rearwardly from the point and adapted to lap the wing and to abut against the shoulder, a tongue extending rearwardly from the point and insertible longitudinally into the dovetail groove, and means upon the bottom of the share and cooperating with the tongue for holding said tongue within the groove.
2. The combination with a plow share having a forwardly extending Wing adjacent the landside thereof, the upper face of the wing being disposed below the corresponding face of the plow share to form an obliquely disposed shoulder, there being a longitudinal groove in the front edge of the plow share, of an elongated blade fitted against the front edge of the plow share, a rib upon the blade and extending Within and longitudinally of the groove in the share, means extending through the share and rib for securing one end of said rib in the groove, a point bearing against the wing on the share, an apron thereon lapping the wing and abutting against the shoulder and the adjacent end of the blade, said apron constituting means for holding the adjacent end of the blade in engagement with the share, and means for detachably securing the point to the share.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in;
in the presence of two witnesses.
