7 Claims. (Cl. 97 1 2 This invention relates generally, to plows and in particular to a sectional plow share having a detachable blade section.
the use of a plow only the. cutting. blade or edge of the plow share is subject to any appreciable wear. As a result many plows now in use are provided with detachable blade sections removable for replacement or. sharpening purposes. However, the detachable connection of the cutting blade to a plow share, in prior art sectional plows, is not entirely satisfactory due to the fact that the inter-locking devices forconnecting the blade with the plow share protrude or project from the face and/or the back sides of the plow share whereby the scouring action of the plow is reduced, or a frictional drag produced between the back side of the plow and the ground.
A; further objection to sectional plow shares ofthe prior art is found in the fact that the replaceable cutting blade is not positively .held against movement relative to the plow share and is subject tobecoming loose and then breaking or falling off.
it is an object of this invention, therefore, to provide an improved plow.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sectional plow share. having a detachable blade in which the blade connecting means are entirely within the confines of the plow whereby the face and back sides of the plow are free of any projecting portions.
A further objector this invention is to provide a sectional plow sharein which a detachable blade section is urged. toward an interlocked engagement with the body section of the share in the normal operation of the plow. ,A feature of this invention is. found inv the PIQVisionof a sectional plow share in which a hollow. pointofa detachable blade section is formed with internal rib portions adapted for interlocking engagement with coacting recesses in the point of a body section, with the rib portion providing for the. blade section point being worn relatively without impairing its engagement with the body-section point.
Further objects, features and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following; description when, taken in connection with theaccompanying-drawing in which:

The body section l5. consists of' a blade portion I! and a. landside l8, with perforations I9 adjacent the upper edge of the blade portion I! being adapted to receive means for connecting the body section.|5 to a usual mold bjoard (not shown). held in a locked position on the body section |5 by means including a series of longitudinally spaced projections 2| and 22 projected upwardly and rearwardly from the top edge 23 of the blade section l6.
As best appears in Fig. '7 the projections 2| and 22are alternately arranged longitudinally of the blade section H5, with the projections 2| .being in the plane of and continuous with the face side of the blade section l6, and the projections 22 continuous with and in the plane of the back side of the blade section l6. The projections 2| are ofa substantially rectangular shape. while the projections 22 are of a substantially triangular shape for a purpose which will be later noted.
The lower edge of the body section H3, is formed in its face side with longitudinally spaced recesses or cavities 24 corresponding in shape and adapted to receive the projections 2|, and its back side with longitudinally spaced recesses 26 corresponding in shape toand adapted tov receive the pro.- jections 22. From a consideration of Figs. 1 and 8 it is seen that the recesses 24 and 1.6 are alternately spaced longitudinally of the body section l5. In other words a recess 26 in the back side of the body section I5 is located intermediate adjacent ones of the recesses 24 in the iaceside of the body section I5.
The point 2'! of the blade section. I6 is of a sub.- stantially V-shape in cross section with the legs 28 and 29 of the V diverging rearwardly from their common or leading edge 3|. Located within the point 2'! is a substantially V-shaped lug formed by a pair of rib portions 32 and 33 oppositely arranged on thezinner surfaces of the legs The detachable blade section I6 is V 28 and 29, respectively. The point 34 of the body section l (Figs. 1 and 4) is formed with a rearwardly extended recess 36 with the opposite sides of the marginal wall of the recess being of a tapered form as indicated at 31'.
In the assemblyrof the blade section IS with the body section IS the point 34 is positioned within the blade section point 21 with the rib por-. tions 32 and 33 arranged at opposite sides of the recess 33in the body section point 34 (Figs. 2 and 3) 'With the points 21 and 34 thus relatively arranged the blade section H3 is moved in a rearwardly inclined direction relative to the body section l5 to move the projections 2| and 22 into interlocking engagement with corresponding. recesses 24 and 26, respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.. By virtue of this relative assembly of the blade section IS with the body section |5 the recess 36 in the body section point 34 is in an interlocked engagement with the rib portions 32 and 33 in the blade section point 21 to hold the two points together against relative movement; Relative lateral movement between the two sections Hi and I8 is eliminated by the construction of the projections 2| and their corresponding recesses 24. Thus referring to Fig, I it is seen that the sides 38 and 39 of each projection 2| are inclined up-v Wardly and rearwardly, with the sides 4| and 42 of a slot 24 in' turn being sloped upwardly and rearwardly at angles corresponding to the re- ' spective sides 38 and 39 of the projections 2|. As a result when a projection 2| is received within a recess 24 the projection side 38 is in interlocked engagement with the recess side 4| to hold the blade section l6 against longitudinal movement in'one direction relative to the'body section |5 while also holding theblade Hi against movement downwardly away from the body section l5.
The blade section I6 is thus retained against downward movement relative to the body section 'lfi by the interlocking engagement of the projections 2| with their corresponding recesses 24, and by the interlocking engagement of the recess 35 with the rib portions 32 and 33; The proje'ctions 22 cooperate with the projections 2| in retaining the blade section 6 against longitudinal movement toward the left, as viewed in Fig. 1, relative to the body section I5.
As shown in Fig. 1 the projections 22 are smaller than the projections 2| so that their corresponding recesses 23 in the body section l5 are smaller than the corresponding recesses 24 for the projections 2|, whereby to increase the a strength and rigidity of the lower edge of the body section |5. The projections 22 effectively cooperate with the projections 2| to prevent any wobble or movement of the blade section |6 out of alignment with the body section l5 due to any pressures applied on the face or back sides of the blade section. 1
The blade section H5 is held against longitudinal movement toward the right, as viewed in Fig. 1,
relative to the body section l5, by locking means comprising an enlarged lug A3 extended upwardly from the upper edge 23 of the blade section I6 and located at the left or trailing edge of the blade It, as viewed in Fig. l. The lug 43 is received in an enlarged recess 44 formed in the back side of the body section IE5 at the left or trailing edge thereof as also viewed in Fig. 1. The recess 44 is adapted to receive the lug 43 within the plane of the back side of the body section I5 so that the lug does not project outwardly from such back side.
The free end of the lug 43 is provided with a lateral extension 46 which, when the lug 43 is received within the recess 44, is adapted to be bent over the left end of the body section |5 in abutting engagement with such end. By virtue of the abutting engagement of the lateral extension 46 with the left end of the body section IS, the blade section I5 is held against longitudinal movement toward the right relative to the body section I5. As a result the blade section I6 is effectively locked with the body section l5 to form a unit plow share, and is detachable from the body section It only on release of the extension 46 from an engaging position with the left end of the body section l5. This release is accomplished by bending the lug 43 until the extension 45 is free of the body section |5. The blade section l6, on release of the extension 44, is then longitudinally movable toward the right, as viewed in Fig. 1, to provide for the removal of the projections 2| and 22 from their corresponding recesses 24 and 26, respectively, in the body section. a It is to be importantly noted that the projections 2|, 22 and 43' are received in their corresponding recesses 24, 26 and -44, respectively, within the plane or the surface confines of the body section l5, so as to provide for smooth and continuous surfaces on both the face and back sides of the plow share. In other words the outer surface of the projection 2| is flush with the face side of the body section 5, as shown in Fig. 5, while the outer surface of a projection 22 is flush with the backside'of the body section|5 as shown in Fig. 6. I
.As previously mentioned the rib . portions 32 and 33 in the point '21 for the blade section I6 are adapted for interlockingiengagement' with the recess 36 in the blade section point 34. The rib portions 32 and 33 also constitute reinforcing members for the legs 28 and 29 of thepoint, 21. As a result the legs 28 and 29 may be'worn relatively thin, but by virtue of the rib portions 32 and 33 being inwardly of the legs 28 and 29'an interlocking engagement of the point 21 and 34 will be maintained.
Although the invention has been described with respect to a preferredembodimentthereof it is to be understood that it is not to he so limited since changes and modifications can be-made of said blade section and all of said projections being within the transverse confines of said blade section, said body section having side cavities open to the lower edge thereof and arranged in a corresponding relation with said projections, said cavities being adapted to receive said projectiona' on a rearwardly inclined movement of said blade section relative to said body section, with the outer surfaces of said projections substantially flush with the face and back surfaces of said body section, and means for releasably' locking said blade section against forward movement relative to said body section, with said last mentioned means being within the confines of the face and back surfaces of. said plow share. j

In a plow share comprisinga body section and a detachable blade section, having a point of a substantially V-shape in cross section, a pair of rib portions oppositely arranged-on the inner sides of the legs of said V-point, a point on said body section having the forward edge thereof of a contour to be received within said blade section point, in interlocked engagement with said rib portions, upright rearwardly inclined projections on the top edge of said blade section, rear- Wardly inclined recesses in the lower edge of said body section corresponding to said projections and adapted to receive the same, with said body section point being receivable in the point of said blade section and said projections in said recesses on a rearwardly inclined movement of said blade section relative to said body section to a locked position, and means on said blade section adapted to engage said body section to lock said blade section against forward movement relative to said body section.
3. In a plow share having a body section and a detachable blade section, longitudinally spaced projections being extended upwardly and rearwardly from the top marginal edge of said blade section, with said projections alternately arranged at opposite sides of said blade section but in the plane of said sides, with the lower marginal edge of said body section having upwardly and rearwardly extended recesses in opposite sides of said body section and adapted to receive corresponding ones of said projections, with said recesses being of a depth such that when the projections are received therein the outer surfaces of said projections are substantially flush with the side surfaces of said body section, with the interlocking engagement of said projections and recesses holding said blade section against longitudinal movement in one direction relative to said body section, said body section having an enlarged recess adjacent one end thereof, an enlarged upright projection adjacent one end of said blade section and adapted to be received in said enlarged recess within the confines of said body section whereby the opposite sides of said plow share are of a smooth contour, and a looking portion on said enlarged upright projection engageable with the one end of said body section to hold said blade section against longitudinal movement in an opposite direction relative to said body section.
4. A plow share comprising a body section and a detachable blade section, fiat projections extended upwardly from one side of the top edge of said blade section, other flat projections extended upwardly from the other side of the top edge of said blade section, with said flat projections and said other flat projections being alternately arranged in a spaced relation longitudinally of said blade section, said body section having recesses in opposite sides open to the lower edge thereof, said recesses corresponding to said projections and adapted to receive the same withtive transverse movement and said blade section against longitudinal movement in one direction relative to said body section, means on said blade section adapted to engage the trailing edge of said body section to lock said blade section against longitudinal movement in an opposite direction relative to said body section, a hollow point on said blade section, and a point on said body section receivable within said blade section point, with said two points having coacting portions thereon for releasably locking said points against relative side-wise movement.
5. In a plow share having a body section and a detachable blade section, coacting portions on the top edge of said blade section and on the lower edge of said body section adapted for interlocking engagement to lock said blade section against longitudinal movement in one direction relative to said bodysection, and a locking member on said blade section engageable with the trailing edge of said body section to lock said blade section against longitudinal movement in an opposite direction relative to said body section.

In a plow share comprising a body section and a detachable blade sectionhaving a point of a substantially V-shape in cross section, a pair of rib portions oppositely arranged on the inner sides of the legs of said V-point, a point on said body section having the forward edge thereof of a contour to be received within said blade section point in interlocked engagement with said rib portions, coacting portions on the top edge of said blade section and on the lower edge of said body section adapted for interlocking engagement, with said body section point being receivable in said V-point, and said coacting portions interlocked, on a rearwardly inclined movement of said blade section relative to said body section.
7. A plow share comprising a body section and a detachable blade section, coacting portions on the top edge of said blade section and on the lower edge of said ,body section adapted for interlocking engagement to releasably lock said blade section against rearward movement relative to said body section, a hollow point on said blade section, a point on said body section-receivable within said blade section point, and coacting portions on said two points adapted for interlocking engagement to lock the points of said two sections against relative sidewise movement, with the coacting portions on said two sections, and the coacting portions on said two points, being interlocked on a rearwardly inclined movement of said blade section relative to said body section.
