The body of the The top and bottom faces of the body converge to a pointat the front of the body. The blade which is carried by the tip bears on the top of the body of the tip and has a working portion projecting forward therefrom. The structure provides means anchor- '1ng the rear 'portionof the blade to the tip and in its preferred form this means involves a lug projecting rear- -wardly from the blade and entering a socket. in the base of the tip, the socket being-located in the face of the base adjacent the top ;of the body and between the sides of-the base. The lug when engaged in the socket holds the-rear end portionof the blade down and seated on the top of the-body andit holds the rear end portion of 'theblade against shifting laterally relative to thebody of the tip.
The invention provides-means retaining the blade .on
the tip and also serving to hold the forward end portionof the blade down or in seated engagement with the top of the tip -body,'as well yas-holding the forward end portion of the blade against shifting laterally relative 'to the tip. The retaining means preferably involves a tongue carried by or joined to the blade forward of the body and extending downwardly and rearwardly from the blade, preferably through a longitudinal channel in the-botton1 of the body of the tip. The tongue has an upwardly projecting part or head at its rear or free end .which engages-a rearwardly faced shoulder in the body of the tip. The shoulder engaged by the head is preferably formed by a recess provided in the tip, for instance, in the body of the tip from'the bottom of the longitudinal channel that carries the tongue. The engagement of the-tongue in the-longitudinal channel effectively maintains the blade against'shifting laterally relative to the body of the tip. The tongue is angularly'related to the plane of the blade inthe same manner that the top of the tip body is related to-the bottom of the channel provided in thebottomof the tip so that when the blade is engaged on the body of the tip the body wedges between the blade and the tongue.
It is a general objectof this invention to provide a tooth construction which; involves but two parts, namely, a tip and a blade, which parts have cooperating portions by which the blade is effectively maintained in operating position on the tip.
Another-object ofthis' invention is to provide a cooper- ;2 ating blade and'top having cooperating partsat the rear end of the blade and at the forward end of the blade, which parts cooperate to .maintain the blade on the tip against shifting or movement-in any .direction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character above referred to in which the blade is of plate-like construction-having aretaining tongue formed thereon or struck therefrom, thus making-it unnecessary to provide supplemental parts requiring application to or connection with either'the blade or thetip that carries the blade.
A further object of the invention ;is. to provide ablade carrying tip which is of simple, inexpensive construction and which is so formed as to effectively. retain and brace a blade thereon.
The various objects and features of our invention will be fully understood'from the following detailed description of a typical preferredform and application of the invention, throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view .of a typical implement-such as a bucket having a plurality of teeth projecting therefrom, each of which involves the construction provided by the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan v-iew of one tooth taken substantially asindicated byline -22 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal detailed sectional view of the. tooth constructionshown in Fig.2, beinga view taken substantially as indicated by. line-3-3 on Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a detailed transverse'sectional view taken as indicated by line 44. on Fig. 3.
The present invention is applicable, generally, to teeth or the like-such as are employed'on implements such as buckets, diggers, etc., .andin the case illustrated it is shown applied to atooth on a bucket. The form of the invention illustrated is characterized by a tooth tip having a baseA and a forwardly projecting body B on thebase. Ablade .C ismounted on orcarried by the tip whilemeans D anchors the rear end portion ofthe blade to the tip and means E retainsthe forwardendportion of the blade relative to the tip.
In ,the particular case illustrated the base A .of the tooth is fixed on or secured to a forwardly projecting shank 10 and it hasa front, face 11 from which the body B-of the tip projects. .The body of thetip is shown as having a.flat'top.12,.a flat .bottom:14 and flatparallel sides 13. The top 12 and the'bottom 14 of-the body converge and join .or cometogether at the forward end 15 .ofthe body. At the rear end of the body where-the body joins the base A the top.12-and bottom 14 are spaced asubstantial distance apart so the body is heavy and strong at thispoint.
The blade C as provided by the present invention is preferably a flat plate-like part of resilient material, for purposes hereinafter described, is elongate in form'and substantiallyrectangular in cross sectional configuration. The blade has a flat top 20, a fiat bottom 21 that rests or seats on the flat top 12 of the body B, and it has fiat parallel sides 22 which are shown as occurring in the planes of the sides 13 of the body B. The blade has a working portion 30 projecting from the tip end 15 of the body B which portion of the blade is shaped or dressed to have the desired cutting ;or digging action.
The anchoring means D serves primarily to hold the rear end portion of the blade C down or on the top 12 of the body B and it also serves to prevent lateral shifting of the rear end portion of the blade relative to the body. In the preferred form of the invention the means D provid-es cooperative engagement between the rear end portion of the blade and the tip; preferably the base A of the tip. In the case illustrated the mean D is shown as including a lug 35'project ing rearwardly from the inner of the channel. element and is preferably angularly related to the blade blade. the blade. The cut X is of such shape and configuration 1 3 or rear end 36 of the blade C and engaged in a socket 37 provided in the base A from the front or face 11 thereof. The top 38 of the socket acts to hold the lug down to maintain theblade against the top 12 i of the body while the ends 39 of the socket hold the lug against shifting laterally and thus maintain the blade seated on the top 12 of the body and holds the forward portion of the blade against shifting laterally of the body.
In its preferred form the means E involves a resilient tongue 40 carried by or anchored to the blade C itnmediately forward of the body B, which tongue extends downwardly and rearwardly from the blade and has a head 41 at its rear or free end which cooperatively engages a shoulder 42 provided on the body of the tip. In the preferred form of the invention the tongue 40 engages under the body and in the particular case illustrated it is engaged in a longitudinal channel 45 formed in the body to extend rearwardly from the tip end 15 of the body to the rear end portion thereof. The tongue is shaped and proportioned to fit or occupy the channel 45 so that the sides of the channel hold the tongue against shifting laterally relative to the body and therefore the forward end portion of the blade which is secured to the tongue is held against lateral shifting.
- The head 41 on the tongue is an upwardly extending projection and in the case illustrated the shoulder 42 is established in the desired manner or at the desired point by forming an opening in the body from the bottom The tongue 40 is a straight elongate C at the same angle that the bottom of the channel 45 is related to the top 12 of the body. Through this construction or relationship of parts which is clearly shown in Fig. 3, wedging engagement is established between the body of the tip and the blade with the tongue projecting therefrom..

It will be apparent that the head or projection 41 may be suitably established on the tongue by bending the end of the tongue upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3. Through the construction just described the tongue 40 is integrally joined with the blade C that is made of a resilient material, as above set forth, and the means E is established without utilizing any parts or material other than are necessary for the blade C.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent how the blade C can be arranged in place on the tip by entering the body of the tip between the tongue and the blade and forcing the blade rearwardly relative to the body causing the tongue 40 to flex or spring enough to let the head 41 pass through the channel 45 until it is in position to spring or move up and into the recess 50 where it engages behind the shoulder 42. As the tongue is thus moved through the channel and entered into the recess 50 the blade moves rearwardly along 14 I the top 12 of the body and the lug 35 enters the recess 37 causing means D to be engaged at the same time that the means E is engaged. When the blade has been applied to the tip and is secured by the means D and E as above described, the structure is ready for use and the blade will dependably remain in. place and tight on the tip under all normal working conditions. When it is desired to remove or replace the blade the tongue 40 is flexed or lifted to disengage the head 41 from the recess 50 following which the blade, with the tongue, can be removed forward relative to the body B, freeing the blade from the tip.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of our invention we do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to ourselves any variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art and fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. In combination, an elongate tooth tip having a base with a forwardly opening socket therein below the top of the tip and spaced from the sides thereof and a body projecting forward from the base immediately below the socket and having a bottom and a flat top, a flat, elongate blade of resilient material seated on the top of the body, a projection on the blade at the rear end thereof engaged in said socket and held thereby against upward and lateral movement relative to the tip, and retaining means adapted to hold the forward portion of the blade seated on the body including a flexible tongue struck downwardly from the blade leaving an elongate opening therein and substantially narrower than the blade and projecting rearward and downward from the blade from a point immediately forward of the body and engaging the bottom of the body and having latching engagement therewith, the tongue being disposed below and coextensive with the opening in the blade.
2. In combination, an elongate tooth tip having a single, unitary, forwardly projecting and converging elongate body with sides and a flat top and a bottom diverging rearwardly relative to the top, the body being continuous from one side to the other and the bottom of the body having a downwardly opening channel in it extending longitudinally of the body and having a rearwardly facing shoulder beneath the top, a blade of resilient material seated on the top of the body, and a flexible tongue integral with and struck downwardly from the blade and substantially narrower than the blade and extending downwardly and rearwardly therefrom to have a free rear end and engaging in the channel to be substantially confined therein, and having an upwardly projecting head at its free end engaged with the shoulder.
3. In combination, an elongate tooth tip having a base with a bottom, a top and sides, and a single forwardly projecting elongate body with a bottom, a continuous top and sides, the base having a forwardly facing socket therein spaced from the top and from the sides thereof, and the body having a longitudinal downwardly opening channel in the bottom thereof and confined thereto, the channel having a rearwardly facing shoulder beneath the rear end portion of the body, a blade of resilient ma terial seated on the top of the body, anchoring means anchoring the rear portion of the blade to the tip including a lug projecting rearwardly from the blade and engaged in the socket in the base of the tip, and retaining means holding the blade on the tip at the forward portion of the body including a flexible tongue integral with and struck downwardly from the blade and substantially narrower than the blade and projecting downward and rearward from the blade from a point immediately forward of the body and engaged in the channel in the body to be substantially confined therein and held against movement laterally of the body, and a lug on the rear end portion of the tongue engaging the shoulder.
