Description

PLOWSHARE Filed Jan. 13, 1941- ATTOR N EYS Patented Aug. 26, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC TPLOWSHARE v Dock Matthew Kernodle, Jamestown, Ind. Application January 13, 1941, Serial No. 374,297
2 Claims.
This invention relates to plowshares, and its general object is to provide a share that is madeup of a pair of sections, namely a body section for attachment to the moldboard in the usual manner, and a blade or cutting edge section 'detachably secured to the body section by means,
whereby the blade section can be easily and expeditiously removed for sharpening or replacement, thus it will be seen that my invention materially reduces the cost of maintaining a;
Another object is to provide a sectional plow a share that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efiicient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein lik characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is an outer side view of my share with parts broken away and in section.
Figure 2 is an inner side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view illustrating the manner of applying the blade section to the body section.
Figure 4 is a sectional View taken approximately on line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 5-5 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 6-6 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure '7 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 1-1 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that my share is generally of the conany kind, as it will be understood that my invention lies solely in the sectional feature, the structure of the sections, and the means for attaching the blade section I to the body section 2. I The body section 2 is of course elongated and much wider than the blade section I, as well as has astraight upper edge 3, and the front end 4 extends from the upper edge at a forward and downward inclination, andformed thereon is a laterally I extending substantially triangular shaped member 5 to bear against the front end of th landside of the body of the plow, the member 5 being attached thereto by a fastening element .6. Fastening elements I are formed :on the inner face of the body section for attachment to the moldboard inthe usual manner.
The bottom or lower edge 8 of the body section from the rear'end thereof is straight for the major portion of its length, while the'front portion of the lower edge is curved downwardly to the lower end of upwardly and forwardly inclined edge an elongated substantially rectangular lug or tongue 18 that is tapered inwardly from its front to its rear end and is of a size relative to that of the edge 9 to provide a relatively wide marginal abutment shoulder l I about the lug, as best shown in Figure 4 which likewise illustrates that the forward portion of the body section is thickened as at l2 vto not only reinforce the same, but to provide the thick edge 9 for the lug Ill.
The body section is likewise thickened along the length of the lower edge 8 and the latter has a deep groove l3 therein, which extends longi-- tudinally throughout its length, as best shown in Figure 3. Fixed adjacent to the lower edge 8 in equi-distantly spaced relation to each other and with the shanks thereof bridging the groove, are rivets I4 having rounded heads engaged with the rear or under face of the body section, and flat heads countersunk in the upper or front face,
7 as best shown in Figure 6. The rear end I5 is slightly inclined rearwardly from the upper edge 3 and formed on the rear end adjacent its bottom is a rearwardly directed ear l8 spaced laterally from a rearwardly extending portion H.
The blade section I includes a relatively narrow strip like member I 8 of a shape to follow that of the lower edge of the body, in that the forward portion thereof is curved downwardly and the remaining portion to its rear end is longitudinally straight, but slightly rounded transversely as shown in Figures 5 and 6, and the member I8 is provided with a sharp lower cutting edge through out its length. Formed on the front end of the member 18 is an upwardly inclined point member l9 provided with a socket 20 opening through the fiat upper edge or face 2! that follows the shape of the inclined edge 9, and the socket is shaped to snugly fit and receive the lug ID, for disposal of the shoulder I l in bearing engagement with the face 2|, as best shown in Figure 1. The member l9 terminates at its forward end into a point, as well as has a sharp lower or outer edge which merges at its rear end into the sharp lower edge of the strip like member I8.
The strip member is recessed on its front face 7 along the length of its upper edge to provide a flat shoulder 22 and a rib 23, the latter being shaped to snugly fit the groove IS, with the shoulder 22 hearing against the front outer face 24 of the upper wall of the groove, as best shown in Figures 5 and 6. Disposed in the rib are notches 25 providing seats for the rivets l4, so that the latter cooperate with the lug and socket connection of the point member l9 to prevent any possibility of longitudinal movement of the blade section relative to the body section.
The rib 23 is likewise provided with an opening 26 adjacent to its rear end, for detachably receiving the right angle bent end of the shank of a bolt 21 to be mounted between the ear l6 and the extension l1, and provided with a nut 28 and a washer to bear against the upper faces of the ear and extension for fixing the rear end of the blade section to the body section. It will be obvious that the bolt and nut connection also acts to draw the rib within the groove and locks the blade section to the body section, against any possibility of casual removal or displacement.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A plowshare comprising a body section and a detachable blade section, said body section hav ing a groove along the lower edge thereof, a relatively narrow strip like member included in the blade section, a ribalong the length of the strip like member and mounted in the groove, a lug formed on the front end portion of the body section, a point member formed on the strip like member and having a socket therein for the lug, spaced parallel means extending from the rear end of the body section, and a bolt and nut connection having the bolt detachably connected to the rear end of the strip like member and mounted between the spaced parallel means for cooperation therewith to lock the blade section on the body section.
2. A plowshare comprising a body section and a detachable blade section, said body section having a groove along the lower edge thereof and a downwardly directed front end portion, a relatively narrow strip like member included in the blade section, a rib along the length of the strip like member and mounted in the groove, a lug formed on the downwardly inclined front end portion, a point member formed on the strip like member and having a socket therein for the lug, equi-distantly spaced means fixed to the body and bridging the groove, said rib having notches therein receiving the bridging means, spaced parallel means extending from the rear end of the body section, and a bolt and nut connection having the bolt detachably connected to the rear end of the strip like member and mounted between the spaced parallel means for cooperation therewith to lock the blade section on the body section.
