Description

(No Model.)
S. D. FREEMAN.
PLOW POINT Patented Mar. 26, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL D. FREEMAN, OF SWAN BLUFF, TENNESSEE.
PLOW-POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,918, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed November 20, 1889. Serial No. 330,945. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swan Bluff, in the county of Hickman and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Points; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to plows; and it consists in the novel construction and arran gement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the body of my invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1 cut on the line x m. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view of the same figure cut on the line 3 'g. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the point.
My plow is in the shape of an ordinary shovel-plow, and consists of the body A, provided with a square opening a in its upper end and a circular opening a in the upper end of the pocket B. The lower end of the said body has cut in it a V-shaped opening, having the sides I) and the end b',but having a depressed back 0. In the edge of said opening is cut a horizontal groove 0 c c, the upper face of which is V-shaped or slants upwardly, while the lower face is parallel with and, in fact, is a part of the body 0 of the said pocket. Said back has a lower extension 0, which is designed to and fits into the groove 6 in the lower pocket.
The point D has on its rear face a pocket E, similar to the one above described, having the sides at, the end (1', and top F, and a horizontal groove 6, the lower face ofwhich is V- shaped or slants downwardly, while the upper face is parallel with andis a part of its top F. The said top F is provided with an extension f, the ends and edges of which are designed to and fit into the groove 0 in the V-shaped opening of the pocket B, while the end and edges of the extension 0' are designed to and fit into the groove e of the pocket E. The two parts are kept from slipping by means of a bolt a which passes through the openings a a in the back 0 and the point fi Thus it will be seen that my said plow is doubly braced, having the two pockets B and E, the two tongues or extensions 0 and'f, the grooves c and e, into which said extensions fit, and the bolt a securing the parts together, thus, in fact, making my said plow as strong, if not stronger, at the union between its two parts than it would be if made of one solid piece. When the point is worn, it may be taken oif and upset without handling the body, and when too much worn to be repaired replaced by a new one. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A plow consisting of the body A, having in its upper end the perforation a and in its lower end the pocket 13, consisting of the depressed back C, having the extensions 0, the V-shaped opening, having the groove 0 c c, and in the upper end of said depressed back a perforation a, and the point D, having in its upper end the pocket E, consisting of the face F, having extension f, and the V-shaped opening having the groove 6 e e, and the bolt a passing through the perforation a of the back ('7, and extension f, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL D. FREEMAN.
Witnesses J. M. GIVENS, J. T. Tron.
