Description

SILAS I-I. PUGKETT, OF BELGRADE, MISSOURI.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,801, dated March 15, 1898. Application filed July 21, 1897. Serial No. 645,465. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS H. PUCKETT, of Belgrade, in the county of Washington and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object the production of a plow provided with means for presenting a new edge as often as isrequired by the Wearing of the cutting edge of the share at its central or shin portion.
To this end the invention consists in providing a triangular plate set into a correspondingly-shaped recess in the share and capable by reason of its shape of having either of its sides or edges presented at the front of the plow and constituting a portion of the cutting edge thereof.
The invention further consists in certain other novel details of construction and in the arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and succintly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, Figure l isa perspective View of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the plow. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the removable plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l designates the lower part of the moldboard of the plow, to the forward end of which is rigidly secured or welded the plow-point 2, the said parts being further connected by the landside 3. The part 1 of the moldboard is curved upward, and forming a continuation of the same is the upper part of the moldboard 4c, the parts being braced by an angle-bar 5, riveted to the under side of the parts of the moldboard, from whichit extends to the landside of the plow and is firmly bolted or riveted thereto.
The upper and lower parts of the moldboard are cut away at the landside of the plow, form-. .ing practically a triangular opening, into which is set a correspondingly-shaped plate 6,
held in place by a reinforcing-plate 7, riveted to the rear side of the moldboard and having a bolt-hole, through which passes a bolt extending from the removable plate. It will be noted that the retaining-bolt which is carried by theplate extends centrally therethrough, and this permits of the said plate being reversed to present a straight edge at the landside when the original edge becomes worn. The brace-plate, which holds the removable plate in place, is extended upward and bent to form an car by which the standard 8 is braced. It will be noted that the removable plate is located at the shin of the plow at the point where the greatest wear comes, and thus provides for quickly and conveniently repairing the plow without resorting to the application of a patch, resulting in removing the temper from the adjoining parts of the moldboard. It will also be noted that the moldboard is curved from the point to the upper end of the same, thus presenting a tendency for the plow to properly hold itself in the ground or bury the rear end, the moldboard raking rearward from the landside to allow the soil to slide freely off.
It will be observed that by reason of the central location of the bolt securing the triangular piece the latter may be turned to bring either of its edges into alinement with the cutting edge of the plowshare, or, more properly speaking, of the moldboard, as by reference to Fig, 3 of the drawings it will be seen that this piece is located above the upper edge of the landside.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a plow, of the moldboard having an opening at the shin, a reinforcing-plate secured to the back of the moldboard and extending across the opening, and a plate removably connected to said reinforcing-plate, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a plow, of the moldboard having a triangular opening therein at the shin, a reinforcing-plate secured to the under side of the moldboard, and a triangular plate let into the opening and removably secured to the reinforcing-plate, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a plowshare prospecification in the presence of two subscrib- Vided With a, triangular recess in its front ing Witnesses. edge of a triangular plate secured Within the i 1 recess and designed to be tu rned to bringeither SILAS PUCKEI of its edges into alinementwith the front edge Witnesses:
of the share, substantially as specified. J. M. COMPTON,
In testimony whereof I have signed this JOHN COLFEE.
