R. A. J. ARMSTRONG.
PLOW. No.175,3Z0. Patented. March ze,.1e7e
N.PETER3. PHOTCHJTHDGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. J. ARMSTRONG, OF' KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,320. dated March 28, 1876 application filed January 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. J. ARM- STRONG, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of a plow to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the share. Fig. I is a detail plan view of the point.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved plow, the share and point of which shall be so constructed that they may be detached and reversed when worn to a bevel upon the lower side of the edge, so as to be scltsharpening, and so that they may each be heated, drawn out, sharpened, and tempered independent of the other and of the body of the plow, thus enabling them to be tempered evenly and to the desired hardness in all their parts, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in nmnul'acture and repairs,
' and convenient and effective in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the land-side, and B the moldhoard of a plow, which are made of the ordinary material, and in the usual way. In the lower part of the mold-board B is formed an inclined slot to receive the share 0. The
share 0 is made of steel, in triangular form, or of any other form that will bring its cuttingedge into proper position to operate upon the ground, whichever side of said share be upward. The rear corner or edge of the share 0 fits into the slot in the mold-board B, and has a hole formed through it to receive a pin upon the inner side of the said mold-board to keep it in place, as shown in Fig. 2. In the forward end of the plow-body AB is .formed a socket or slot to receive the point D, and which is divided into two parts by a vertical web or partition. The forward end of the point D is beveled upon both sides, or made wedge-shaped, and its rear end is forked or slotted to fit into the socket of the plow, where it is kept in place by the pressure of the soil and of the share 0.
With this construction, when the lower side of the edge of the share 0 and point D become worn they can be easily detached and reversed, so that they will be self-sharpening, and when worn thick they can be easily sharpened and tempered separately, and at a trifling expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A n1old-board, having oblique sockets for share and point, in combination with a triangular share keyed thereto, and a bifurcated point without fastening, but supported by the share, as shown and described.
ROBT. A. J. ARMSTRONG.
