UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. STRONG, OF DEFIANGE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,464, dated December 8, 1374; application filed June 13. 1874.
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, G. G. STRONG, of Defiance, in the county of Defiance, Ohio, have invented an Improved Plow for tilling soil, of which the following is a specification:
The object of the invention is the construction of a plow in 'such a manner that the parts most exposed to wear can be detached therefrom and new ones substituted by the operator.
The invention consists in the use of a dovetailed point as a means of attaching the point to the plow, and also in the use of a groove in the land-side of the plow, into which the share or blade is inserted, this being not only a means of fastening the blade, but also insuring a tight joint after the parts have been worn away by use.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of the specification herein, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plow having the landside, wing, share or blade, and point. Fig. 2 is a side view of the grooved land-side and wing, with the share and point removed. Fig. 3 represents the share or blade. Fig. 4 represents the dovetailed point.
In the several figures of the drawing, A designates the land-side; B, the wing; O, the share or blade, and D the point. The oblique groove in the land-side is indicated by a. The dovetailed tongue to the point is markedd, and the groove to receive the tongue is indicated by e.
In the construction of the plow, certain The standard and mold-board are to be constructed and attached to the other parts in the usual method of constructing plows. The share 0 enters the groove a in the land-side A, and is fastened by a bolt or bolts to the Wing B. The point D is attached to the forward end of the land-side by means of the dovetailed tongue at and the groove 0, the sides of said tongue and groove being made either parallel or tapering, as shown in the drawing.
' I do not wish to limit myself to the specific form of the tongue and groove as represented in the drawing, for it is not material which part shall be grooved, or upon which the tongue shall be formed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The grooved land-side A, having wing B and dovetailed groove 0, in combination with the detachable point 1), having dovetailed tongue (1, as set forth.
2. In a plow, the combination of the grooved land-side A, having the wing B, the share 0, point D, tongue 61, and groove 0., all constructed as shown and described.
CHARLES C. STRONG.
