Description

W. SHAVER.
(N9 Model.)
PLOW.
P tented A 1*. 20, 1886.
INVENTOR:
BY J/Lwww ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFICE.
WELLINGTON SHAVER, OF MEDUSA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND EUGENE CAMPBELL, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,372, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed October 5, 1885. Serial No. 179,029. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WELLINGTON SHAVER, of Medusa, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a plowto which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is' a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1, and part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional rear elevation of the same, taken through the line yy, Fig. 1.
The objectof this invention is to prevent the central parts of plows from becoming filled with rubbish, and thus compelling the team to draw an unnecessary load.
The invention consists of the combination of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
A represents the beam, B the mold-board, O the point, D the landside, and E the bandles, of an ordinary plow.
F is a plate of steel or other suitable material, the lower edge of which is so formed as to fit upon the upper edge of the mold-board B. The plate F serves as an upward extension of the mold-board.
As shown in the drawings, the upper ends of braces G and clasps H are secured to the extension-plate F by bolts or rivets. The
lower ends of the braces G are secured to the mold-board B or the handle E by bolts or rivets, and are slotted to receive the said fastening bolts or rivets, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and
3, so that the extension-plate F can be readily raised or lowered.
The lower ends of the clasps H are left free and overlap and bear against the inner side of the mold board B to assist in holding the plate F in place. The plate F is also provided with one or more projecting braces, I, so bent or formed that their ends will rest against the beam A to strengthen the said plate F in position.
With this construction it will be impossible for sods, clods, lumps, or other rubbish to pass over the mold-board into the central part of the plow, and thus clog or choke the said plow. With this construction also the plow can turn a furrow up hillmore effectively than an ordinary plow, and will thus leave the soil in better condition to receive seed than when the furrows are turned down hill.
Having thus described my invention,'l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a plow, the combination, with the beam, the mold-board, and the handle, of the extension-plate, the'adj ustable braces, one brace connected to. the mold-board, and the extensionplate being intermediately offset between its points of connection with the extension-plate and mold-board, and turned inward and bearing at its upper end against the beam, the other brace being connected to the extensionplate and adjustably to the handle, and the clip or clasp connected to the extension-plate and overlapping the mold-board and bearing against the inner side of the mold-board, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WELLINGTON SHAVER.
