COUPLING FOR SU LKY-PL OWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,895, dated January 3, 1882'.
Application filed October 24, 1881.
is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure lis a sectional side elevation of a part of a sulky-plow to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement shown as ap plied to a plow-beam and draw-bail. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, the plow-beam being shown in cross-section.
The object of this invention is to allow a sulky-plow to be turned at the corner of a land without raising the plow from the ground, and also to prevent side draft upon the sulky-tongue.
The invention consists in a doublehinge coupling forsulky-plows, constructed with a U-shaped bar and a bolt t'orclamping the plowbeam, and the three bent bars hinged to the clamp-bolt and to the draw-bail of the sulky, whereby the plow-beam will have a free lateral and vertical play, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a wheel, B the arched axle, G the tongue, and D the draw-bail, of an ordinary sulky-plow.
E represents the beam, F the handles,G the standard, and Hthe mold-board, of an ordinary plow. I
I is a U-shaped bar, which passes around the plow-beam E, and has a bolt, J, passed through its projecting ends at one side of the said beam. The bar I and the bolt J form a clamp to receive and hold the plow-beam E, and are secured to the said beam by one or more set-screws, K, which pass through the upright middle part of the bar I and rest against the side of the said beam.
L is an upright bar, the lower end of which is bent outward at right angles, and has a hole formed through it to receive the lower end of the bolt J.
(ModeL) To the side of the bar L is secured, by the bolts M N, a bar, 0, the upper end of which is bent outward at right angles, and has a hole formed through it to receive the upper end of the bolt J. The bars I L O and the bolt J thus form a hinge and allow the plow-beam to have a free lateral play.
To the lower part of the bar L is secured, by the bolt N, the lower end of the bar P, which is bent outward, inclines outward and upward, and its upper end is bent upward, so as to be parallel with and at the same height as the upper end of the bar L. In the upper ends of the bars L P are formed holes to receive the draw-bail D. The bars L P and the drawbail thus form a hinge to give the plow-beam E a free vertical play. The bars L P are kept in place upon the draw-bail D by a tubular collar, Q, placed upon the bail D between the N, which allows the bars L P to be slipped over the angles of the said bail.
I have shown and described inydouble-hinge coupling as swinging below the draw-bail; but with most plows it will be used above the bail, its position depending upon the construction of the sulky and of the plow to be connected with the sulky.
I am aware that a beain and bail have been connected by an adjustable swivel-coupling, and that a beaniclamp and hail have been so connected as to allow the beam to turn vertically; but
What I claim as new and of my invention 1s- The combination, with a draw-bail, D, of a plow-beam clamp, I, bolt J, and bracketL O I, the clamp turning horizontally on the bolt and the bracket vertically on the bail, as and for the purpose specified.
MICHAEL KITE.
