SULKY FRAME POR FLOWS. N0. 315,316. Patented Apr. 7, 1885.
u l I l 'lbf' rmmullllllllllmuHimm ing lunghi/HAMM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON MERCER, OF BIRDS RUN, OHIO.
SULKY-FRAME FOR PLOWS.
f ECIFICATION forming part. of` Letters Patent No. 315,316, dated April '7, 1885. Application filed January 15, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON MERCER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of irds Run, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky Frames for Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved sulky-frame for plows and similar implements, showing it in operation with a plow. Fig. 2 is a top view ofthe same, and Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has relation to sulky-frames for plows and similar implements; and it consists in the improved construction and `combination of parts of a sulky-frame especially adapted for plowing out ditches or banks on the sides of roads or similar places where it is difficult to have a team walking directly in front of the plow, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates an axle, upon the ends of which two wheels, B B, are journaled` while the rear end of a tongue, C, and two diverging hounds, D D, are secured to its middle portion, the rear ends of the hounds `being connected by an end piece, E. -A circular disk, F, is pivoted at its center upon the middle of the rear side of the end piece, and has a number of perforations, G, near its edge. `:into which fits a bolt or pin, H, which fits with `its end into a perforation, I, in the end piece, registering with the perforations in the disk. A stout arm, J, projects from the disk, and has a numi ber of perforations, K, at its outer end, into which the end of the draft-chain L of theplow M or similar implement is secured. Achain," N, is secured to the tongue forward of the axle, l and is secured at its other end to the laterally-` projecting arm J, and serves as a brace for the same. A seat, O, may be secured' tothe frame formed by the tongue and hounds suitable for the driver, and it will be seen that a plow may be attached to the end of the laterallyprojecting draft-beam, and thus beV drawn through the soil without the necessity ofhaving the team traveling immediately in front f the plow, and the distance of the plow from the center of the sulky, as well as thelocation of the plane in which the plow is to be drawn, may be governed by securing the draftchain closer to or farther from the center of the sulky, and byr adjusting the angle of the arm by means of the bolt and perforations.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a wheeled frame having a transverse end piece, a disk pivoted upon the middle of the said end piece in a vertical plane and having a series Of perforations near its edge, a bolt fitting in the perforations in the disk and in a perforatiouin my own I have hereunto affixed my signature` in presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON MERCER.
