SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,559, dated January 1, 1884.
Application' filed September 4, 1853. (No model.)
4To aLZZ whom z5 may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, J. AKNEEDLER, Ma citi# zen ofthe UnitedStates, and resident of Grant, in the county of Indiana and State of" Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Ilows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specication, and in whicha t Figure l is a perspective View of my improved sulky-plow, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.`
My invention has relation to sulky-plows; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a rectangular frame, upon which the drivers seat B is fastened, and which rests upon the straight portion of the axle C, the ends of which are bent downward and outward, the downwardlybent portion upon one `side being longer than upon the other side,
allowing the wheel upon that side to travel in the furrow.
A short inner tongue, D, is rigidly fastened to the front end of the frame, and the outer tongue, E, is hinged upon the outerl end of the rigid tongue, a portion ofthe hinged tongue projecting forward while a portion of it projects rearward, and has the forward end of the plowbcarn F hinged to its rear end.
Immediately over the rear end of the hinged tongue, upon the upperside of the rigid tongue, is a bearing, G, in which rocks a shaft, H, having a crank, I, at each end, and-having a crank, J,at one end at a right angle to the crank I. The ends of the cranks I may be inserted each into one of a series of perforations, K, ntwo flat bars, L, having longitudinal slots, M, at their lower ends, in which slots two bolts, N, slide, projecting from the sides of the rear end of the hinged tongue.
A connecting-rod, O, ^is hinged at one end `to crank J, which is fastened to the rear of crank I and at the other end toa lever, IP, a short distance from its lower end, which is hinged `ward the rear the cranks will `be tilted rearward, raising the rear end of the hinged tongue,
and the forward end of the plow-beam with it; and by tilting the lever forward the end of the plow-beam is in thesame mannerdepressed, and the slots at the lower ends of the perforated bars will admit of a certain amount of yielding or play for the end of the plow-beam when the plow meets with obstructions, while the end of the plow-beam may beradjusted higher or lower by adjusting the ends of the cranks in the lower or upper perforations in the bars, causing the plow to go shallower or deeper, as desired.
A plate, Q, is clipped upon the rear end of the plow-beam, and forms a bearing in which the straight portion of a crank, R, which isn hinged to the under side of the forward end of the frame, rocks, and the side of the beam is provided with a bolt, S, to the rear of the clip, which projects through and slides in a longitudinal slot, T, in the lower end of a fiat bar, U, having a series of perforations, V, in its upper end, into one of which perforations the end of a crank, IV, may be adjusted, which crank is secured upon the end of a rockshaft, X, rocking in bearings Y upon the rear end of the frame, and having a lever, Z, fastened at its outer end at a right angle to the crank, and within easy reach -of the driver.
By adjusting the end of the crank in the perforations in the end of the fiat bar the depth to which the plow will go may be adjusted. and the slot in the" lower end of the bar will allow the body of the plow t0. yield in meeting obstacles without jolting the plow carriage, and the entire plow-body may be raised from the ground by tilting the lever forward, while tilting it rearward forces the plow into the ground.
It will be. seen that by having the end of 4the tongue hinged to the forward end of the plow-beam, and the tongue hinged upon the rigid tongue projecting from the front end of mthe frame, the draft may always be applied immediately to the end of the plow-beam through the hinged tongue, the line of draft PATENT QFFICEQA g N IOO changing as the adjustment of the plow is changed.
I am aware that it is not broadly new in plows or eultivators to have a wheel-mounted frame havino a rigid tongue and a tongue 23 b b e hinged to the said rigid tongue 5 and I am also aware that it is not new to have laterally-projeeting bolts upon the plow-beams sliding in slotted bars or plates to allow a certain amount 1o of play for the plow passing through the ground; and I do not therefore wish to claim such constructions, broadly; but
I claim the following: 1. The combination of a frame mounted on i 5 wheels and having a short rigid tongue at its forward end, a tongue hinged a distance from its rear end to the outer end ofthe rigid tongue, a plow supported from the frame and hinged with the forward end of its beam to the rear 2o end of the hinged tongue, and means for raising and lowering the rear end of the hinged tongue, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. .p 2. The Combination of a wheel-supported ends, a shaft rocking in bearings upon the rigid tongue forming cranks upon its end s pivoted in the said perforations, and having an arm at one end, a connecting-rod hinged to said arm, and a lever pivoted at one end upon the frame and having the connectingrod hinged to it, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
l In testimonyr that' I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. KNEEDLER.
