SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,718, dated November 21, 1882.
- Application filedDecember 6,1881. (No model) -To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. RIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan,
have invented a new and useful Sulky-Harrow, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of sulkyliarrows which are provided with share-beams located beneath the wheel-frame in a manner to be raised and lowered by lifting devices connected with said wheel-frame; and it has for its object certain improvements set forth in the following description and claims. style of wheel -frame preferred by me as being especially adapted for use with the inde pendent share-beams shown is provided with duplex side beams, between which the Wheels are located.

i In the use of a wheel-frame having duplex side beams, B B, supporting the wheels H H, which are provided with the short axles a a, 1 form it rectangular, with end beams, D D, and a centrally located cross beam, N; but to obviate danger of. the frame warping or beams D D springing I provide said beams with a truss-brace, S, secured to them and crossing beam N, with which it is also connected, as shown in Fig. 3. With this frame 1 connect the independent share-beams a a in two sets by means of the shaft-rods c c, pivotally connected with beams N, D, and B B. The rear share-beams, a a, are longer than those between the wheels H H, in order that shares may be located in the rear of said wheels at 0 0. By this means a wider strip of land may be harrowed with less distance between.

The pitch of the share is thus readily controlled by locating bolt e in different perforations in the end of casting 6, Figs. 6 and 7. Chains n n, with handles r 7', areconnected with the independent share-beams, and pass through staples driven into the beams of the frame. By this means the share-beams may not only be raised in unison, as hereinafter explained, but by raising up the handles r'r they may be raised independently of each other. Between the duplex beams F F, located across the wheelframe, I pivot the leverwheel d and pulleys t' Chains y y are secured to the front and rear share-beams, pass over pulleys M, and are secured to wheel d, as shown in Fig. 5. Ghain y is secured the center beam, 0!, and connected directly with wheel 01, Figs. 1 and 5. Thus a person sitting in the drivers seat can readily operate either the lifting-lever,
raising all the share-beams at once, as shown meeting with castings-e by means of bolts 6,
and pivoted at their upper ends to the frame.
I am aware that wheel-barrows have heretofore been provided with means for raising and lowering independent sections of theshare-supports separately and together. Hence I do not claim such features, broadly; but
What I claim is-- 1. In a wheel-harrow, the combinatiomwith the independent share beams, the pivoted draft-rods adjustably connected thereto, and the lateral braces, of the levcr-wheel'and pulleys, the liftingchains attached to said leverwheel, and the independent liftingchains, whereby the share-beams may be raised and lowered independently or in unison.
2. In a wheel-harrow, theindependentsharebeams and the pivoted draft-rods adjustably connected with said beams, in combination with the lever-wheel, the pulleys, the liftingchains attached to said lever-wheel, and the independent lifting chains, for the objects specified.
