SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,563, dated Ap-rn 14. 1885.
Application filed July 2l, 1884. (No model.)
invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part ofthis speci-` ication.
' Our invention relates to animprovement in sulky-plows.
The invention consists in improvements in sulky-plows,which will-rst be described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows la perspective view of our improved sulky-plow. Figs. 2 to 17 show detail views of each part in perspective.
c is a main casting, having two bearings conforming to the curve of the beam, to which it is secured by two clamps, b b. The rear end of casting a forms a long vertical bearing for swivel-standard c, carrying the axle for wheel d. Upon the upper end of swivelstandard c is pinned a cogged segment, e,which is operated by a corresponding segment on the short end of lock-lever f. Upon the rear end of casting a anear, g,is raised, forming a fulcrum for lever f. Upon the top of ear gis fixed an adjustable stop, h,tted for the bolt on lever f. Spring-lock on lever f holds the rear wheel rigid at the will of the operator. The rear wheel, d, is inclined to land in such manner as to equalize the vertical andlateral pressure on its axle. The forward end of the plow-beam is made separate from the rear section, and is bolted rigidly to the long spring-catch lever The forward end of rear section of beam is pivoted in lever An adjustable rack-segment,
j,is secured upon the forward end of casting a,
which receives the spring-bolt on lever fi, holding lever i at any point desired by theoperator, thus regulating the' depth of furrow. Main frame la is carried by the tongue, and is atcounty of Marion aud forward end. of the beam. rIhe rear arm of frame 7c rests upon the upper side of the beam, and is secured stirrups, m m,
seat-lever, n, is fulcrumed upon rear arm of frame k, and is held in place by two eyes--one at each end of its bearingou rear arm of k. The forward arm, o, of seat-lever 'n is extended forward parallel to thebeam, a roller attached to lever ia short distance to the rear of beam-j oint. The weight of the operator thus relieves the lever of the downdraft ofthe plow, and doubles his power in lifting the plow arm,` p, is attached to main frame 7c by means of a surface tting the outside surface of frame r, and two hooks, which grasp the lower edge of frame k, and is held in place by abolt passing through main arm. Upon the outer end of arm 19 is fixed p au adjustable block, q,which carries an inverted swivel-standard for the forward wheel, r, and the rear of which is formed into abearing,
s, that corresponds to and moves upon abear- 7 5 ing which is fixed upon the rear of the swivelsleeve t, which is attached to the axle of wheel fr. Said bearings are so constructed that they will permit wheel rto move freely, and at the same time to prevent it from turning at too 8o great anangle when the plow `is thrust sidewise by passingover an obstruction.
The operation is as follows: The team is harnessed to the forward end of the beam, and
the adj ustmentsare identical with those of the 85 ordinary walking -plow.77 The operator p places spring-bolt on lever f in its notch. He
then depresses the lever i and starts the team, and the plow will enter the ground. By manipulating lever f the plow may be forced 9o in any desired direction. Upon reaching the end of the-furrow, if the operator desires to turn the plow in the ground, he depresses Vlever i and loosens the spring-bolt on lever f, and the p team will turn the plowin the ground without 9 5 difficulty. As the team starts forward, leverf is brought back to its notch, and lever i is If the operator adj usted to the proper depth.
tached by its forward arm through link Zto the p 5o to the main casting a by two in which it has an oscillating motion, and by which the plow is leveled. A
andpasses under 6c from the ground. An adjustable j` frame and end of said 7o chooses to turn without plowing, he has only l strain of wheel or plow, substantially as to lift the plow from the ground with lever 'i and loosen spring-lock on lever y,when by nianipulating lever f the plow may be brought 5 into proper position without driving the team beyond the furrow on the opposite side ofthe plowed land, as is usually necessary in operating sulky-plows.
Having fully described our invention, what 1o we claim as new and valuable, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with main frame k and the tongue, of caster-wheels d and o', swiveled thereto, andthe lever f, acting upontheswivel-standard of the rear wheel, d, whereby the operator may move the plow in any desired direction, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with 2o main frame 7a and the tongue, and with casterwheels d and 1, the latter having a swivelstandard adjustable as to width and height,of the Swivel-standard c of wheel d, and the lever f, operating to reciprocate said standard c by suitable connections, whereby the operator may allow wheel d to turn in the furrow, and permit the plow to turn in the ground without shown and described.
3. The combination,witl1 main frame k, the tongue, and caster-wheels d and r, of a plowbeam having a joint therein, and a hand-lever rigidly secured to the front section of said plow-beam, whereby the depth of furrow may be regulated, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a sulky-plow, the combination, with frame la, the `jointed plow-beam, and the casterwheels d and o', of the seat-lever n, fulcrumed upon the main frame and provided with the forward arm, o, connected to the hand-lever, and the rear arm carrying the seat to the rear of the line ofsupport between easter-wheels d and r, whereby the weight of the seat and operator will counteract the downdraft, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands'this 18th day of July, 1884.`
