Description

(No Model.)
- J. BUCHANAN.
, PLOW.
No. 261,528. Patented July 25,1882.
before produced.
UNITED STATES JAMES M. BUCHANAN, OFINDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 261,528, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed October 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. BUCHANAN, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrought- Iron Plows, of which the following isa specification.
The object of my said invention is to produce a wrought-iron plow for breaking, roadmaking, and such like purposes, of great strength and durability, at a comparatively small cost.
It consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
I am aware that wrought-iron plows of sub. stantially the form and containing many of the features illustrated in this invention have been I therefore desire to be understood as claiming only that which is specifically described and claimed as new.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made'a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow in complete form, and Fig. 2 is a similar view, except that the side plate is removed and dotted lines are used to indicate the position of hidden parts.
In said drawings, the letter A is used to indicate the complete plow; B, the plow-beam; O O, the handles; D, a connecting-bar, and E the plowshare.
The plowAis constructed wholly of wroughtiron, and all its parts are large and strong.
The plow-beam B is of substantially the ordinary form, except that its rear end, where it is connected to the plowshare or landside near the ground, turns back instead of forward, and thus, in connection with the bar D, braces the parts very thoroughly.
The handles 0 G are attached (one or both) to both the plow-beam B and the bar D near the bottom. They are provided with braces c c, which are also, by means of a bolt passing through them and the said beam and bar, connected to them at or near where the beam turns to go forward, as shown. This arrangement aids materially in the general plan of producing a strongly made and braced plow. The bar D extends from the point of the braces c c downward on an angle toward thepoint of the plow, where it is secured to both the handles (3 and to the plowshare and landside. By this means the strain on the handle is carried to the plowshare instead of to the plow-beam only. i
The plowshare E is of any ordinary or approved form, and, as well as its landside e, is secured firmly to the several parts B, O O, and D.
As will be understood from the foregoing description, my invention consists of a strong, durable, well-braced plow, of but few parts, and those of simple and inexpensive construction. It is intended principally for use in the building of railroads and such like heavy work, and not particularly for ordinary plowing.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a plow, the combination, with the curved beam B, of the handles 0, extended forward of the standard or beam, the braces 00, the plow E, and thebrace-bar 1), extended obliquely forward from the bracing-point of the beam and bolted to the plowshare and handle-extension, substantially as set forth.
JAMES M. BUCHANAN.
