UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
JAMES FRANKLIN BURNS, OF VANLEER, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT CLEMENTS, OF DICKSON, TENNESSEE.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 31, 1912.
Patented Jan. 14,1913.
Serial No. 700,714.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES F. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vanleer, in the county of Dickson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide in a plow a novel and improved arrangement of stock and a brace therefor, whereby a strong and durable plow is pro duced.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved method of securing a colter, whereby the latter is rigidly held in place, and is also capable of quick adjustment.
\Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a plow constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes a plow-beam to the rear end of which is bolted, as indicated at 11, to extend rearward therefrom, a stock 12 which carries the plow-shovel 13. The stock comprises two parallel bars which are spaced apart laterally so that the rear end of the plow-beam may be placed therebetween. The rear ends of the bars have a downward curve and they are connected at their lower ends.
Between the two bars which constitute the stock 12 is mounted a brace comprising a bar 1 1 having at its forward end a depending portion or foot 15 which projects downward from the stock and has its lower end pointed, as indicated at 16, which is for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The rear end of the bar 1 1 has a downward curve 17 the lower end of which terminates near the foot of the stock and is secured therebetween by a transverse bolt 18. This bolt also secures the plow handles 19. The main portion of the bar 14: is bolted between the two bars of the stock, as indicated at 20. Handle braces 21 are secured by one of the bolts 11.
At 22 is indicated a colter, the shank 23 of which fits between the bars which constitute the stock 12. The rear edge of the colter-shank abuts against the downturned forward end 15 of the brace-bar 1 1 which latter is grooved, as indicated at 2a to provide a seat for the shank, and in said edge of the shank are notches 25 which are adapted to be entered by the pointed end 16 of the brace-bar. The front edge of the coltershank is opposite the rear end of the beam 10 and between said edge of the shank and end of the beam is driven a wedge-shaped key 25, whereby the colter is securely fastened. The key is located between two bars constituting the stock 12. The rear end of the beam 10 is enlarged vertically, as indicated at 27 to provide a wide bearing for the key.
To the front end of the beam 10 is attached a draft clevis 2S and this end of the beam has a bottom shoulder 29 below which the clevis is located, whereby said end of the beam is prevented from slipping through the clevis, and the plow is steadied and teetering avoided.
A plow constructed as herein described is strong and durable and permits the colter to be quickly adjusted. The colter is also securely braced and rigidly held in place.
I claim:
1. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the beam and extending rearward therefrom, said bars terminating in a downward bend, a brace between the stock bars, said brace having a downward bend at its rear end which terminates adjacent to the foot of the stock, a bolt passing through the last-mentioned portions of the brace and the stock, and plow-handles secured by said bolt.
2. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the beam and extending rearward therefrom, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars, a colter between the stock-bars, and the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end of the brace bar, and means for securing the colter.
3. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the beam and extending rearward therefrom, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars, a colter between the stock-bars, and the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end Q teedeee of the brace bar, and a wedge driven between the colter and the rear end of the plow beam.
t. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the bar and extending rearward therefroi'n, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars, a colter having a shank the edge of which is notched, said colter-shank extending between the stock-bars, and between the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end of the brace-bar, said end of the brace-bar having a pointed foot which engages the notched edge of the colter-shank, and means for securing the colter-shank.
5. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the bar and extending rearward therefrom, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars, a colter having a shank the edge of which is notched, said colter-shank extending be; tween the stock-bars and between the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end of the brace bar, said end of the brace bar having a pointed foot which engages the notched edge of the colter-shank, and a wedge driven between the colter-shank and the rear end of the plow beam.
('3. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the bar and extending rearward therefrom, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents a colter having a shank the edge of which is notched, said colter-shank extending be tween the stock-bars, and between the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end of the brace bar, said end of the brace bar having agroove forming a seat for one edge of the colter-shank, and a pointed foot which engages the notched edge of the colter shank, and means for securing the coltcrshank.
T. In a plow, a beam, a stock comprising spaced bars secured to the rear end of the bar and extending rearward therefrom, a brace bar secured between the stock-bars, a colter having a shank the edge of which is notched, said colter-shank extending between the stock-bars, and between the rear end of the plow beam and the forward end of the brace bar, said end of the brace bar having a groove forming a seat for one edge of the colter-shank, a pointed foot which engages the notched edge of the col t er-shank, and a wedge driven between the other edge of the colter shank and the rear end of the plow beam.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
