Wiigasscs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. ZIEOHECK, OF BRIGMAN, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES ZIECHEOK, OF ABBOTT, TEXAS.
SWEEP-STOCK ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,543, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed July 11, 1901. Serial No. 67,898. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN M. ZIECHEOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brigman, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sweep-Stock Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved sweep-stock attachment for plows, by means of which a sweep or shovel may be attached to a plow and operated at any desired angle and by means of which the leverage of the handles is applied directly to the shovel or sweep; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow provided with my improved sweep-stock attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one section of the stock. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the furrow-bar.
The standard 1 is here shown as separable from the beam 2 and secured thereto by clipbolts 3; but the standard may be formed integrally with a steel or iron beam, as will be understood, and I do not limit myself in this particular. To the lower end of the standard is bolted a furrow-bar 4:, the said standard being provided on one side with a rabbet 5, in which the furrow-bar is placed, and the front end of the furrow-bar projecting forwardly from the standard, as shown, and being provided with a lateral ofiset 6. On opposite sides of the offset 6 of said furrowbar are pivotally bolted, as at 7, the sections 8 of the stock 9. Each of the said sections is of the form here shown, and the said sections are provided with the rearwardly-extending arms 10, which are disposed on opposite sides of the standard 1, are separated at a suitable distance in advance of the standard by a block 11, and are provided at their lower ends with forwardly-extending bearing points or feet 12. The block 11, which spaces the sections of the stock apart, forms a slot between the said sections for the bolts 13, which are employed to secure the sweep or shovel to the stock. A shovel 14. is here shown as attached to the stock, and it will'be observed that the same bears against the front side of the stocksections and against the bearing point or feet 12 thereof. A sweep of suitable form may also be secured in the same manner to the stock in lieu of the shovel. A bolt 15 is passed through alined openings in the stocksections 8 and in the block 11 and secures them together. It will be understood that by means of the bolt 7 the stock is pivotally connected to the front end of the furrow-bar, so that the stock, and hence the shovel or sweep carried thereby, may be set at any desired inclination, and it will be further understood that the arms 10 of the stocksections, by being disposed on opposite sides of the standard 1, prevent the stock from rocking laterally on its pivotal bolt 7,.
Between the rear ends of the arms 10 of the stock-sections are disposed the front ends of the handles 16, the said handles being secured to the said arms by bolts 17. Hence the handles form levers, which are directly connected to the pivoted stock and are entirely disconnected from the plow otherwise than through the stock, and thereby the shovel or sweep carried by the stock is directl y under the control of the plowman, who may vary the inclination thereof by raising or lowering the handles at will without having to raise or lower the plow.
The arms 10 of the stock-sections are provided with series of openings 18, in which a pin 19 may be set and adjusted, the said pin being adapted to bear against the rear side of the standard to secure the stock at any desired inclination thereto, if desired. If the pin be made of wood or of other suitable frangible material, the same will break should the shovel or sweep encounter an unyielding obstruction, and hence avoid injury to the plow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination with the standard ofa plow, of a f urrow-bar secured thereto and projecting forwardly therefrom, a stock adapted for the attachment thereto of a sweep or the like inplement, the said stock having rearwardly-extending arms on opposite sides of the standardjand'handles attached to said arms, whereby the leverage of the handles is standard, handles attached to the said arms and means to set said stock at any desired angle, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN M. ZlEOHECK.
