To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDW'ARD BATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rush, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved plow especially adapted for breaking up newly-plowed land, but also adapted for use as a cultivatorplow and for other purposes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing a portion of the forked beam, the adjustable colter, and the blocks which adjustably secure the colter to the beam.
In the construction of my improved ploWI employ a beam 1, which is provided with a vertical slot 2, that extends from its rear end to a point within a suitable distance of its front end, thereby forming the forked arms or rear extensions 3. In practice the beam may be made of wrought or cast metal or of any other suitable material. The handles 4 have their front ends secured to opposite sides of the beam, as by a bolt 5. A bolt 6, which passes transversely through the forked rear extensions of the beam, secures the lower ends of a pair of braces 7 thereto, and the said braces have their upper portions bearing against the inner sides of the handles 4 and provided with adjusting-openings S. Bolts 9, which are appropriately disposed in certain of the openings 8, secure the handles to the upper portions of the braces? and admit of the vertical adjustment of the handles, as will be understood.
The standard 10, which carries the point 11, is provided with a slot 12, the length of which is nearly coextensive with that of the standard. The upper end of the standard is disposed in the slot 2 between the rear ends of the forked rear extensions of the beam 1 and is secured in place by a bolt 13, which forms a pivot for the standard, whereby the latter may be disposed at any desired inclination. A brace 14: has its upper end secured in the l slot 2 by the bolt 6 and its lower end disposed in the slot 12 of standard 10. A bolt 15 passes through said standard and through an appropriate opening in the said brace 14:- Said brace in practice has a number of the said openings 16, which admit of the hereinbeforedescribed adjustment of the standard. The bolt 17, which secures the point on the front side of the standard, passes through the slot 12, and the tap of the bolt, which is not here shown, bears against the rear side of the standard, as will be understood. The slot 12 and the bolt 17 admit of the vertical adjustment of the plow-point on the standard.
I also employ a colter or cutter 18, which is disposed in advance of the plow-point and the upstanding shank 19 of which passes upwardly through the slot 2 in the beam and through openings in a pair of blocks 20, which are respectively disposed on the upper and lower sides of the beam and are secured thereopenings 22, with which said blocks are provided, and through the slot 2. The cutter or colter may be vertically adjusted, as will be understood, and hence adapted to cut in advance of the plow-point at any desired depth. Set-screws 23 are employed, which operate in threaded openings in the blocks 20 and bear against one side of the shank of the colter to secure the latter at any desired vertical adj ustment. It will be understood that the blocks 20 may be adjusted longitudinally on the plowbeam to dispose the colter at any desired distance in advance of the plow-point. It will be further understood that owing to the openings 2.2, with which the blocks 20 are provided, the latter may be adjusted and secured in such manner as to dispose the colter at any desired angle with reference to the plow-point. I may employ two or more of the colters' in advance of the plow-point and adjust them appropriately, so that the rear colter will cut lower than the one in advance thereof.
