Description

Y BGAUNT. w Atta-ching Coltersto Flows.
N0. 217,363. Patented July 8,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
FILLMORE GAUNT, OF, MULLIGA HILL, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING COLTERS TO PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. `2153363, dated July 8, 1879; application tiled February 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FILLMOEE GAUNT, of
Mullica Hill, Gloucester county, New Jersey,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Colters, &c., to Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a certain improvement in attaching colters or skm-plows to and to provide for the longitudinal or vertical adjustment of the colter or skim-plow.
'Ihese objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of part of a plow, showing my improved device for attaching a colter to the beam of the same, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan on'the line 1 2, Fig. 1.
A represents the mold-board of the plow,
i and B the beam, which has the curved shape common to most iron-beam plows.
Against o ne face of the beam, at a point immediately above the upper edge ofthe moldboard A, bears a plate, a, the front edge of which is` bent downward and suitably sharpened or provided with a suitable hardened block, so as to form a colter, D. Against the opposite face of the beam bears a plate, b, the front edge of which is bent around the front edge of the beam, and carries an eye, d,
which embraces the arm a and is adjustable on the bent end of the arm b, such adjustment being effected by manipulating a nut, e, with which said bent end is provided.
The rear end of the arm b is embraced by a yoke, j', the latter terminating in va threaded stem, i, which projects through a slot, m, in the plate a, and is furnished with. a nut, n.
It will thus be seen that when the eye dhas been properly adjusted the tightening of the nut a will insure the clamping of the plate a firmly against the standard or upright portion ,v of the beam B.
In order to prevent the plate a from moving longitudinally independently of the plate b when the two are clamped to the standard or beam B, the upper and lower edges of the plate a are provided with notches x, to one set of which the eye el is adapted when the platesare clamped together, so that the plate a is firmly held in its proper longitudinal po It will be observed that the plate a is clamped to the beam without the necessity of weakening the same by forming bolt-holes therein, and, owing'to the fact that the plate I) is adjustable laterally in respect to the plate a, the
lat-ter can be adapted to plow-beams of different thicknesses. Y
When a skim-plow is used, the front end of the arm a is properly constructed for the attachment ofthe same thereto, and, if desired, the colter may be made separate from the arm, and may be attached thereto instead of forming part thereof, as described and shown.
My improvement 4may, if desired, be `used in connection with plows having beams of wood, the plate a in this case being clamped to the standard, which extends vertically from the mold-board to the beam.
l claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the standard or upright portion B of a plow-beam, the plates a and b, the laterally-adjustable eye d, the yoke f, having a threaded stem, t', and the nut n, as set forth.
2. The combination of the standard or upV right portion B of a plow-beam, the plate b and its eye d, the yoke f, its threaded stem t' and nut n, and the plate a, having notches w and a slot, m, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
f FILLMOBE GAUNT. Witnesses:
JOHN M. C. Riem/LAN:
SAMUEL HITGHNER.
